    Default Library Question

Around Thanksgiving Mrs. 8_String Checked out of the Library the double CD collection of Bluegrass #1's.

Well we decided to by our own copy on Amazon and well what do you know...

...it was also from a public library in Ohio.

Are some recordings/ publications that are just dedicated for libraries?

I'm more or less just curious..... ....not a show stopper.

    Thanks,

As far as I know, no. Maybe it sold out and is out of print.

Finding a title like that can be tough. Do you still have the CDs or can you get them again? Then look at who made them and look to their website or use that info to guide your search. Those compilation CDs don't stay in print for long either, sometimes.

Libraries "accession" and "de-accession" materials all the time. When they're de-accessioned, they go into the "used" market; either the library has a book sale, or the materials are declared "surplus" and auctioned, or in some cases they're just discarded.

Libraries also have a penchant for buying collections that could be considered "archival." Around the Bicentennial there was a whole series of LP's put out by, I think, New World Records (who?), with plain white covers and copious liner notes, covering many types of ethnic, regional and specialized music in America, and aimed at libraries. I was fortunate to pick up some of them in "remainder" record stores. Moe Asch's Folkways label started out as Ethnic Folkways, I believe, with the intention of collecting music from various world traditions, for mainly library use.

If a recording doesn't get abused by borrowers, and especially if it's a "niche" style that's unlikely to be borrowed hundreds of times, it has a good chance of being de-accessioned in good shape, and being a bargain on the used-recording market. Hope your bluegrass collection lives up to that standard.

Keith, Barnes and Noble in the Mesilla Vally Mall, Las Cruces, has a pretty good selection of bluegrass for this area. I will be out of town for the holidays but will give you a call and you may take a look at what music I have.
