Default Ry Cooder - Goin' to Brownsville video 1973

Hope this hasn't been posted previously. I just stumbled upon it while looking at some David Lindley stuff. Some of Ry's best IMO.

This is a great vid. Do the Gibson wonks know what year/model he is playing? F4?

Fantastic!! I'm a big Ry Cooder fan. Down the list I watched the "Jesus on the main line" video and that was great too

I was assuming it was a Gibson just because I don't know who would've been building oval hole copies in the early seventies. Whatever it is he makes it sing!

Definitely F-4. Couldn't get a close enough look to see if it's truss-rodded or not.

In a 1979 issue of MWN, Grisman speaks with Ry, I *think* he mentions that F-4.

Yep, he mentions he has an F4 and an H4 mandola. I also think he mentions the F4 has an aluminum bridge.

Is that a B on the peghead rather than Gibson?

When I saw him in 1973 he also played Billy the Kid on solo mandolin with fingerpicks.

I just have to revitalize this one...two years is just too long for this not to be active...
I think we can all use some serious Mojo and Black Cat Bone for the Holiday...
    This is pretty stunning stuff...

Duuuuude! I know I've uploaded this at least twice in the last few months! But that's OK. I love this video, and it deserves its own thread.

I cite this pretty often as an example of how a mandolin can be used as a solo instrumental, how to play the blues on a mandolin, the variety of ways to play a mandolin, etc etc etc. Great stuff. I wish sometimes that someone would upload the album version too. That's what really got me hip to ... well, I just told you.

I've carried this video with me on my iPhone for about a year now. Good to have with me when I need it!

    ...snip...
Sorry about that...When I searched, this was the most recent thread that popped-up, but I only searched in the titles.

Sorry to be redundant. I spend several hours looking for and uploading mandolin music to my new MySpace music player and I stumbled across this and his 'Billy The Kid'.

Besides Cooder's genius I also discovered several Andy Statman tunes that just blew me away!...I had a good mandolin listening day yesterday!

Oh, I'm going to continue to refine and expand my MySpace music player with mandolin-focused music, but it's got lots of 'not strictly Bluegrass' mandolin greatness on it now. Check it out.

Ed - Don't be sorry ... don't worry, be happy. As I said, this deserves its own thread, easy to find. It is that good. Heck, David has it on his iPhone so he will never be without it. I should make this my avatar, and may well do so after the holidays. Until then the Pogo gang will do just fine!

Seeing Ry Cooder in concert is what turned me on to the mandolin in the first place.

Hearing this on his first album is what did it for me. Missed seeing him back around this time because he got tabbed to fill in for a last minute cancellation on SNL - the night I was going to see him, opening for Taj Mahal. Robert Palmer was, um, not the same, not quite a suitable substitute.

Been up on the Blues Mando subforum since April -- I posted it there as my favorite Ry, too. http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/gr...scussionid=595

That's the stuff! Amazing how he does all that, while singing, without looking at the fretboard. He even turns his head away when he takes the lead. It's as if watching what he was doing would throw him off - he has to just feel it. Thanks for finding this.
