I wanted to post a report on the mandolin construction of Walt Kuhlman of Gypsy Music in Scottsdale Arizona. The high quality of wood, the integrity in construction, the simple yet beautiful aesthetic, and most of all, the instrument's AMAZING tone quality all show forth a great giftedness and commitment to excellence. I have already bragged on his work to my friends and will continue to do so. He has produced an instrument that inspires me to play!

I agree from first hand experience -- Walt builds very nice instruments that offer a lot of bang for the buck, and provides his customers and potential buyers with first class customer service.

I have a Gypsy Spirit mandolin and a Gypsy Companion mandola. Each instrument is outstanding. The volume is unbelievable. Excellent craftsmanship and beautiful woods. Walt is currently making a 2-point OM for me. I'll be taking delivery in a couple of weeks - since Walt is going to be visiting a friend of his who lives near me he is hand-delivering it. Now that's customer service.

Congrats on your pending new arrival -- please be sure to post pics and a review in the "Post a picture" forum when you receive it.

BTW, did anyone see the custom-order Zook Walt has pictured on his homepage? Looks sweet, with a carved 3-D headstock with an inlayed stripe, and an ornate carved soundhole cover.

He doesn't actually have a page dedicated to it, as it was a custom order. Here is a collage with a pic of it that I saved from the main page of the Gypsy's web site; when I saw it I emailed Walt and that's how I learned it was a once-off build.

    Pretty sweet though, eh?

Walt's got an OM - similar to the zook - on Ebay.

Here is a better pic of the custom Zouk -- way cool soundhole and headstock, huh?

Well the OM on Ebay doesn't have that headstock and the woods are spruce and maple, but it's going for a great price....

Man, that Zouk sure looks beautiful....
