It turns out that renegade mandolin was a Rogue mandolin. The guy bought it and then had a guy lower the action and put in a pickup for an extra $100. I bought it for $90 which included the mandolin, strap And cable. This plays like a kentucky A-style that my friend has. I love it!

I actually own a Rogue A that I got when my husband and I bought a pair -- mandolin and guitar -- for $99 from Musician's Friend to keep at my mom's house so we wouldn't have to keep transporting our "good" instruments the 500 miles every time we were visiting. I call it my toy, mostly because of the price, but it's a reasonable instrument if you don't mind that it sounds about what i paid for it. It plinks like a child's jack-in-the-box, but the action is pretty fair and it makes music.

Congrats B*njoBen! Wise move to talk him down in price. Glad you love your instrument - if you love it, you will play it- Far more important than looks or the name on the headstock! #

The only problem is it does not have a truss rod. Could I get one put in?

wouldnt be worth installing one. just play the heck out of it, and if it develops a neck issue that's a good sign to upgrade.

i exclusively play Rogue A style.

say it that way, and it sounds like its intentional. plinks like a cardboard ukulele, but hey, i'm learning.
First touched a mandolin August 1st, 2008. I'll celebrate it like an annual holiday from here on.

Yes, but it would cost several hundred dollars - no joke. Before you spent the money upgrading the Rogue it would make more sense to purchase a better mandolin.

You're talking about a $200 plus job on a $90 dollar mandolin assuming you can find someone who'll do it. There's a bit of debate about how essential truss rods are for mandolin necks. Other than the possibility of a set-up, I wouldn't invest anything in this instrument except time playing it.

    3 uses I've found for a $49 Rogue:

    1. travel mandolin - It's cheap and relatively quiet.

    2. guinea pig for alternate tunings - I've currently got mine "Tedesco-tuned" to DGBE.

    3. decoy - It keeps my 3 year old away from my Kentucky.
