How many different mandolins have you smelled? Which ones smelled the best. I smelled Hannigan's Gilchrist and it was yucky. It might have been the Calton case I don't know. Gibsons smell sweet. What does a Poe smell like?

Why would you worry about such a thing. It's probably the finish. Air it out. And the case. It will likely all go away. Oh yeah- open the windows.

One mandolin I saw recently, I believe an Elkhorn, had lavender oil sprayed inside. You get this nice soft scent rising into your nostrils as you hold it.

My mandolin is odorless, my playing is not.
Now if you want to sniff a fine smelling instrument, a wiff of a new Martin 15 series.

This is beyond weird! Though, I do know some smell better than others. Sad part is so many smell like saloons that they get played in. The lavander is intriguing.

Love that fresh varnish smell. Unfortunately it fades over time, until it is barely detectable.

Not a mandolin, but the inside of my Martin tenor guitar has a musky, and yet somehow still very pleasant smell.

I have to respectfully disagree on this thread just being weird. We talk all the time about what mandolins look like. Those discussions celebrate an enjoyable aspect of an instrument that is mostly independent of the instrument's function, which is to make sound. Similarly, talking about how an instrument smells is simply discussing another potentially enjoyable, tangential sensory aspect of an instrument. I have a Martin 000-15S that has a great, pungent "spicy-wood" smell to it. I really adds to my enjoyment of playing the instrument. If I found a mandolin that smelled the same way, I would buy it, but I have not gotten the same smell from other all-mahogany instruments. I actually wish I knew what was different about that Martin.

My Poe still has a slight smell of varnish when I first open the case. As it continues to cure out the smell continues to deminish, kinda like a new car.

I smell the same smell on certain hiking trails after a rain - wet basswood.

Have we come to the point that we are actually wondering what mandolins smell like? We have used up all potential topics....guess its time to start over.

I have a custom Weber Gallatin with the Antique Walnut (?) gloss finish. Even though it's about four years old, the finish still has a very strong smell-- especially when I first take it out of the case.

It's not unpleasant, and it doesn't smell like paint thinner or anything-- I guess it's just a nitrocellulose laquer smell. You can smell it from four feet away. I'm going to take it in to Weber and get their opinion on it when I pick up my OM.

Anybody else have an oderiferous finish?
