I'm going to Rockygrass this year. Going alone, and for the first time. Anyone else going? If there's anyone who'd like to meet up, let me know.
    Thanks.

I'll be headed up to Lyons next Tuesday and staying with friends that live there. I'll be looking to pick in the evenings for sure. I'll be toting along an Old Wave in a Colorado case covered Calton. I hope we can meet while there. I know you'll have a blast.

    Bud-

You look familiar. Were you at the first Monroe style camp a couple years back?

I'll be at Rockygrass, on-site. Look for the old beat up pop up camper, with lots of dead soldiers laying about.

Yes, I was at the first Monroe Camp. I've shaved most of the goatee away now.
I'll be looking for the pop-up.

I'll be there. Live 20 minutes away. Got a beard, a green had, a guitar, and my collings mt.

Wish I was camping there. It would be so much easier than driving home at 5am each night.

Either way, freaking out about. I wish it was tomorrow......

I'll be there with family in tow (no room to bring the mando this year). Just on Friday though.

I did hear that the guy that build one of my mando's (the Turkey Creek) will be there with a booth area. I can't wait to meet him. Anyone with time on their hands should take the time to play one. I love mine!

I'm a bit down about attending as a pure watcher - but it's still better than sitting at home!

I've gone the last three years with my dad, who lives in Louisville-- it's always a high point of my year. I'll only be about 9000 miles southwest of there this year, unfortunately. I did have a dream last night that I was there, and I was trying to spot other cafe members based on their avatars. Hmmm. Don't see Homer Simpson with a Virzi in his head... Don't see a naked baby with headphones doing "devil horns"... No bearded Mona Lisas...

    Pretty strange dream.

To clarify, I suppose I could phsically carry a mando with me. I have a 1 year old and wife who doesn't play. The moment I leave my son with her to go find a jam is the moment her brain starts scheming our next knock down-drag em out fight. No thank you! I don't entirely disagree either. Parenting a 1 year old at a festival won't be easy.

Give a tremelo for me lespaul. Maybe next year.......

I'll be at Rockygrass this year, and actually doing the Academy leading up to the festival as well. It starts this Sunday. Have any other Cafe folks attended the Academy before? Any tips?
Cary, Bud, CKT, tbone & Baby Horns... it would be great to figure a way to hook up Friday. (And anyone else I who might be lurking...) The pop-up may be the way to go. Any other identifying things about the camper? Sticker or what state your plate is from?
    I'll be rockin' a Kimble 2-Point, a tie-dye and probably Pete Townsend-like bloody fingertips.
(Calluses have been getting out of shape recently, dang it!)

    I'm going to the academy.

It will be my sixth or seventh year (I've lost count).

Bring suntan lotion, a broad-brimmed hat, mega-sized water bottle, sound recording device, and if you plan to stay up late picking, don't drink, 'cause you'll hate yourself in the morning...

That's a good idea, Chris--making a plan to meet up. Perhaps someone who's been there before can suggest a place to meet. Friday would be good. Can i simply suggest 1 p.m. to get the ball rolling? Can someone name a place? An alternative time is also fine with me.

As for identifying features, I carry a gator light case and will have a Canadian flag showing in the pocket. My mando's a Passernig.

It'll be great if we can make this work!

CKG, I'm pretty sure I know who you are, and on that note, I'll see you at the pick on Tuesday @ OB. We'll chat about this. I play a Flatiron A.

    Nathan?

If you're at the academy, come by Oskars Blues on Tuesday night. Not that I know much about the jams in the world, but I'd say it's one of the best. I guess....

Do people come to the campsites to jam at night during the academy? I heard after dinner folks jam all night and you can come to the campgrounds and join the jam. Is that true?

Rocky Grass Academy tips (I've been twice)? Good free coffee near the mando building shop pretty early. Stop into the mando building about tuesday or weds and check it out. Stop by the mando builder instructor camp site for the evening jam. It's a very elaborate site and usually a fun jam. Drink lot's or water!!!!

Check out the Oscar Blues brew pub. Good beer but stick with the burgers and run of the mill stuff.

Don't miss the first morning sessions with the bands in residence. Be sure to participate in the non mando stuff like the ensomble (sp?) classes. It can be very fun. Put yourself out there. Watch or participate in the band scramble. I never laughed so hard.

The schedule goes to heck on thursday. You should check out the Rowen in the River event. Stand in the St Vrain river with a hundred of your new friends and sing gospel a capella. The mandos start to come out of the shop and the pro's sit around and jam with them. One year Edger Mayer did an improptu demo on his bass. I missed it but I had Roland White all to myself.

The camping can be very cramped. Cooperate with your neighboors to make bigger common areas.

    Have fun, drink water!

Flatpicking Contest Premims is at 1pm on Friday, so I'll be there. What about another Mandolin Cafe Jam at 1pm on Saturday somewhere on the onsite campgrounds? (Just before the String Dusters show.)

I'm going to try to see the mandolin contest. The mando prelims are right when Russ Barenberg & Bryan Sutton on Friday, and considering I'll be up lateeeee Friday night, it will be tough to be back there by 10am Saturday for the finals.....

No, only campers with passes for the academy and friends with guest passes are officially allowed in the Academy campsite during the academy,

Sure, people slip in, but it's not condoned.

Thursday evening everything goes to heck and it's open season, but until then it's a pretty tight ship.

Actually, for the past couple years, i've had no problems going to jam at the academy at nite, while not being enrolled. In fact, they've even let you park on-site.

I was planning on going up to the academy a couple times next week to pick.

Well, people don't seem to be following up the offer to meet at a time and place. No problem, I hope to find some of you. And anyone is welcome to p.m. if they like.

I'm not going to the academy but i'm going to visit Thursday to hear the bands play. (Thanks to one of the organizers.) So maybe I'll see some people there.

Hey CAry.. I will be there (thanks to Bud unknowingly getting his spare ticket to another cafe member!!!!) Red hair goatee carrying a mando. I often jist head over by the rvier in the shade and pick at anytime which results in someone else picking with me. But if you see me or someone that looks like me then say hey wanna pick and I will.
