Excuse me if I'm off on this, but I thought that David Harvey had worked for Gibson for several years allready?
Or is his position changed to head luthier from anouther spot?
Thanks

To quote the press release:
"...announced that David Harvey, master musician and producer has joined the Gibson Original Acoustic Instruments Division (GOAI) as master luthier."
Perhaps he wasn't with the OAI division or he didn't carry that title. I'm sure someone can shed more light on this. I was under the impression that he was already working for Gibson right after Big Joe left. He could have been there prior to that point as well.

He was there a few years ago for sure, he did the set up on my mando. Maybe he got a promotion or quit and came back.
He was there before Big Joe left, but I believe he was in the repair dept. rather than as a luther. Actually, I only remember him as being the setup guru at that time.

I got to meet him and talk to him at Merlefest. In fact we talked for a long time. He is an extremely nice guy and a talented musician. He almost had me buy a Goldrush that I know I would of been in trouble for if I took it home.
The impression I got was that he was promoted into that position.

David worked for me in repair while I was at Gibson. He moved to OAI about a year ago to work in the mandolin department.
Have a Great Day!

I had a class with David last year at Grass Valley. Very nice guy and a great player of course. I believe this means he'll be signing instruments? What an honor! Congrats to him!
Didn't he take over signing the Master models a few years ago when Danny Roberts stepped down from that position?Originally Posted by (nuttysadguy @ May 14 2008, 18:54)
Dave is an amazing mandolinist... I heard and saw a video of him playing at Ricky Skaggs' place and he was off the scale... I'm sure he'll only do good things for mandolins over at Gibson...
No I didn't leave Gibson, I moved from Plant Supervisor to
Repair Supervisor about two years ago.

I was Program Director for the BC Bluegrass Workshop for a few years. We were fortunate enough to be able to book David and his band Wild & Blue for two or maybe even three years running. I'd heard some stuff by his father, Dorsey, but knew nothing of David. It was a pleasure getting to know him. He earned my favour by being a great teacher, as well as a fantastic player. I remember there were several times when I walked away from conversations with him thinking "that guy really knows mandolins". Naturally, I thought appointing David Harvey to head up the mandolin department was a pretty good move. He has high standards and I predict great things ahead!
Danny R.,
I have an A5L that you signed in 2005 and I love it! Compliments my '25 A Jr well. I hope to meet you one of these days. I'm a fan.

My DR fern is one of the best around! It just so happens to have a DH setup.
Yup my 2002 Gibson Fern is also signed by Danny and it is a gem. I have never had anyone play it with out them being surprised at the tone, sustain, and volume. It is just a very good mandolin.Originally Posted by

Due to current budgetary restrictions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off -- sorry about the inconvenience.
Thanks to all the well wishers out there! After working in repair and restoration, for over ten years, in the Nashville area, I went to work for GIBSON'S repair department in 2004. I was offered my current position and transferred in July 2007. Among the many responsibilities overseeing mandolin production, it is me with pen in hand....after the clamps and glue and sandpaper and fretting tools and varnish and french polish and so on and so on....I love it and I'm very grateful! #Thanks to God, Henry Juszkiewicz, Dave Berryman, Rick Gembar, Tom Montgomery, Doug Mann, Danny Roberts, Jackie Miller, our production team, the staff, and the folks that continue to support Gibson Instruments! #Wow.....sorry, this is starting to sound like an acceptance speech!
might as well stroke David completely!![]()
