    Default J 73 /Oval hole mandolin combination?

    Hello all,
Picking up a new mandolin this weekend. It's a Kentucky KM172.
It's not had a lot of playing time so it's a bit 'tight' at the moment but that will soon be rectified! (it wont know what's hit it).

    Anyhow, my question is this....
Bearing in mind we play mainly old time/celtic stuff I was wondering if the J73's might suit this kind of music & also mandolin, I have never used them and thought I would check if anyone has experienced this sort of combination, ei: oval hole/lighter string.
I would put the Monels on it but it's a massive pain to get hold of them (UK based) & I'm not 'that' keen on the J74's.
    Cheers Oliver.

If you are wanting lighter strings well suited to an oval hole for the kinds of music you want, I would suggest J62's, which is a light 80/20 bronze set.

    John,
What would you say would be the sound difference between the two?
I use the Martin bluegrass strings on my guitar and like them, I think they are 80/20 bronze.

I've got EXP77s on my Breedlove 00 and love 'em.
