I found this today and don't know what it is, help is appreciated. It's in great shape just no label. Here's the pics, sorry for some of the infocused stuff but I'm rushing at work but want to know what I have.

It looks like a Galiano. The pickguard inlay is identical, or very close to one in my files.

Playing lately:
Brentrup A4C -- 1915 Frank Merwin Ashley violin -- 1904 Embergher Type 3 -- 1937 Gibson L-Century -- 1939 Gibson L-00 -- ca. 1890s Celebrated Benary Banjo -- 1985 Monteleone Grand Artist Mandola
Here is another Galiano with similar fretboard inlays. Notice tho that the first crescent shape is upside down compared to yours. BTW these two that I show have original bridges AFAIK.

Thanks Jim, I had a feeling you'd know. Do you know roughly the age of these and value? I didn't pay much and it actually plays and sounds decent. I'm gonna restring it with some very light strings and clean it up, a new bridge is in order too but I've spent more on mandolin accessories than the entire instrument so it should be fun. Oh where can I get a bridge?
Try Dave Hynds for the bridge. Here is the page from his website for bridges.
Speaking of Dave, he has not posted to the Cafe in several months, although in looking at his profile he has logged in recently.

Dave does make some nice bridges. BTW Dave is still active tho sidetracked with some family matters. I heard from him a week or so ago.
As long as the bridge is fit well to the body and the height is correct it is prob fine for playing. I would spring for some Calace Dolce strings (Bernunzio.com has them, assuming you are in the US). They seem to bring wonderful tone from the bowlbacks that I have them on. Otherwise, if you are on a budget, go for the GHS A-240 Ultralights.
Like most of these yours is prob around 19-teens or so. Galiano made quite a few, some of which were made in conjunction with Raphael Ciani, who was John D'Angelico's uncle and had a shop in Greenwich Village in New York.

Thoughts on value guys? I was guessing $200-$300.
That is what I would guess.Originally Posted by (pjlama @ April 05 2008, 10:48)
