You are right about even the "best" violin cases not being good enough...even top-notch cello cases, which are also hard like Carlton cases have been known to fail. Keep in mind that the violin family has longer, thinner necks and, in the case of these valuable instruments, are also much older, so possibly more fragile. I feel anxious enough with a $6-7K double bass; I can't picture carrying around a $100K+ bass, yet symphony players do a on a daily basis in just a well padded bag. Crazy, huh?
