I just drooled all over my keyboard...
What's the scale on your GOM's Bill?
There are three kinds of people: those of us that are good at math and those that are not.
Well! Those look finest kind, Bill.

Bill, do you have a set to match those glasses?![]()
Beautiful work, as usual. On a side note, a local singer/songwriter and very fine mandolin player met my Old Wave mandolin this weekend. She said playing the Old Wave was "like playing a piece of art."![]()

I like the right one - would take it to an orchestra rehearsal to drive the cello players nuts.
But the cello likeness may be misleading sizewise - what scale?

When I was at Bill's in November I managed to persuade him to part with his personal GOM. It arrived a few weeks ago, I haven't played much else since. Every once in a while I used to think it would be fun to play an octave but it never grabbed me when I tried one.
When I played this one it was instant 'gotta have that'. I was so surprised by how much I liked it that I even got out of the car (to someone else's annoyance) and went back for a last play..
I think mine is 21.5" scale, will check when I get home tonight.
I have one on order for my store.

Phil/Jamie- I still have part of a can of reranch goldtop gold lacquer, and half a tube of gold glitter, probably enough to refinish your tops.......
these are 21.5" scale, as Trevor mentioned, and capoing at the 5th gives a cgda mandola with 16" scale, perfect for old time surf tunes!
11" shorter in the back length than a cello, tho:
Come clean, Bill... Those 'glasses' are really just a couple of bottle openers glued together, right?
It's best never to be without an opener...

Fascinating picture. Also, the neck profile looks quite sharp-edged triangular here - is that so?Originally Posted by (oldwave maker @ Feb. 13 2008, 16:45)

A sound sample would be most welcome here, I guess...?

Bertram, when Bill built my mandolin, I asked him for a neck profile with a "flattened V" shape. Could also be described a a "fat V" or a "fat U with a soft point on the bottom." Regardless, he got it right and it feels fantastic. Then again, he got everything right - it was exactly what I asked for and I've never, ever had second thoughts about the instrument.
Phil...I have a picture of your Old Wave oval hole saved on my computer and drool while looking at it from time to time. #It sure is one of the best looking oval holes I've ever seen and the sound clips you have posted here over the years prove that it sounds as great as it looks. #Bill Bussman sure builds a mighty fine oval hole.
Cheers.
