Personal pref, I guess. I'm partial to the wider nut (recently got a Collings MT with that option) but have played and liked regular-spaced nut mandos. On the Wavs, it is indeed a lot of dough for tuners. Last year I got some of the matte nickel finish Gibson Grover tuners for my Newson F5 and I really like those. Nice looks, high quality removable buttons, and they stay in tune. The new Elite tuners from Stew-Mac look nice as well, and don't break the bank. If you have the cash and don't mind parting with it, go for the Waverlys; they are the best. But know there are good, more affordable options.
I read recently that Don McRostie's new Red Diamond "Crusher" models had the "new lighter-weight Waverly tuners". I haven't seen them mentioned anywhere else, so they may be a proto-type that Don is checking out.
