Thread: The loar

I took delivery of a "The Loar" mandolin yesterday. Flawless quality, but my old Aria F5 is louder. I have The Loar sitting infront of my home theater's sub woofer trying to make it louder. I got a nice case for it with a built in hygrometer to measure humidity. Overall a nice instrument.

It suppose to help accelerate the opening up process of the top via sonic vibrations through the wood.

A "subwoofer" is really a tandem woofer, it doesn't provide the really low frequencies that a true subwoofer would, it just locates a normal woofer away from the tweeters so you can have smaller speakers. Bass being non directional, you can place the woofer where you want it. Either way, I doubt it does much to open up an mandolin. If it did, you would want to place the mandolin eight feet away from the woofer, as bass has long wavelengths and it takes that far to focus.

I bought a "The Loar" last August. The fit and finish are first rate and the playability is very nice but there is hardly any volume. It mostly just hangs on the wall and looks pretty. I'm thinking of trying the MandoVoodoo process by Steve Perry or maybe the Roger Siminoff mando fix up to see if more volume can be squeezed out of it.

Last night I removed the pick guard and the volume increased. The mechanics underneath the pick guard was actually deadening the top vibrations.

I want to get a Poe.

HMM, I think I'll give that a try.

I removed the pick guard on my 'campfire' PacRim mandolin, and its volume and tone increased significantly. It's still 'tinny' compared to my Silver Angel, but much better than initially. But then, I don't think those mass-production facilities care much if the pick guards 'deaden' things at all.

Taking off the pickguard or getting a Poe?

After a couple months of constantly putting The Loar in front of the sub woofer, I can honestly say that the volume of the instrument has increased. It did little so far to bring out the lower end, but the overall volume is a lot better. I'll keep doing it.

Even better results than I expected. I can't imagine how it will be after four months.

That's the Atlantic City story in New Jersey. You walk in the door and say I hit a $250.00 Jackpot last night but you never mention that you dumped it back in plus another $200.00.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I had a similar feeling when I spent a year in Odessa, TX one week.

    Congrats on the new axe.
