    Happy New Year to all.....

Stumbled onto this site this afternoon and thought i'd pass it on for the folks here that enjoy that rare fine art of engraving. Theres lots in the ' tips and tricks ' section that can be directly related to Pearl as well as help on sharpening your tools.

    A cool site.....

Sam is a cool engraver and he used to teach classes, I'm assuming he still does.

Well, I have pretty much recovered from last night. Probably spent 2 hours on that site. For anyone who has tried to engrave anything, that site will put you into perspective.

There was a time in my previous life that I really entertained the thought of taking the classes that Sam was teaching. In looking back I wish I had. The guy is a real artist. I'd never heard of a hobo nickel until I found that site.

That's a pretty amazing bunch of talent on display there. Engraving in different styles, the photography... Thanks for sharing.

Like everyone else,I was knocked out by the work and photographs...,and like Mike,I'd never known of the "Hobo" nickles. I can remember the dark days of the depression (although, for me,they were wondrous, bright days in the sunshine of my childhood)when Bo's walked the tracks peddling one skill or another. Mainly it was chair caneing, tinkering, and willow furniture that I remember. But,heer's thang: Isn't it miraculous to ponder the deep wells of talent and ingenuity that remain hidden in human capacity until necessity mines them? I remain humbled.

Sam is a MASTERFUL banjo player as well as engraver, the very best picker in our area, around Covington Louisiana, and probably anywhere. His attention to detail in his engraving also shows up in his exquisite playing. I truly believe that his playing would impress ya'll as much as his engraving. If you meet him again, listen to him play. His wife Abigail is a wonderful country & bluegrass singer and guitar player, and recently picked up the mandolin.
