Taggart mandolins

Got an email from Weed Patch Music Company last week saying she (Kara Barnard) is carrying Taggart mandolins, well she has two F's. #Bruce makes a killer sounding mandolin.

The site contains a list of production brands and local luthiers who sell through their store. You need to contact them for current inventory.

I don't know Taggart mandos first hand, but Kara's a friend of mine, and a tremendous player... I trust her judgement in instruments.

Bruce Taggart made mandolins for a number of years (I'm sure that Jim Richter has more details about Bruce's work), and I was told that he had stopped making mandolins to concentrate on building fiddles, and is just now making some mandolins again.

Kara Barnard is a great player and one of the musical treasures of Indiana (and the world), and we're happy to have her new shop
up and running in Nashville.

The first 2 quality mandos I ever owned were Taggarts..great mando..

Going to be there this weekend so I should be able to give a report soon.... Jake Brown used to play one at the pizza joint I jammed at so many lifetimes ago in my music.... Gonna have to see why they are asking $7200 for these suckers...

Doug Harden from The Not-Too-Bad-Bluegrass Band (NTBBB) also plays one since the 80s or so and it sounds great. Last I talked with Bruce, he would take custom orders for F and A styles. F runs around $7500 and the A was $3500. That was about 2 or so years ago.

If you stop by, make sure you ask specifically about the Taggarts. I dont think they are hanging on the wall with the Morgan Monroes. I have yet to make it to the store yet myself, but hope to make one of those jams someday.

Carry Fields tipped me off about em, and I know to ask about em...

The cello player for my band has MAS now, so we are shopping for a decent MM or KY mandolin to get rolling with so guess we have to hit all the stores! Sigh.....

I play a Kalamazoo that I dearly love!

Well I played both of them today, and I can say this....

I loved the tone, and the feel was awesome! One of them had a little wider neck, that felt like a Sam Bush model, but the tone really sang!

Now I have not played a real Loar, and I have not fingered a Dude, but these are nice mandolins, with GREAT TONE

That said, I think Eastman has better fit and Finish in places, not everywhere but a few places, in the binding, and inlay felt kind of rough, just the same though these are real nice pickers, and I think that someone will be very happy.... I ended up with a Morgan Monroe, for my friend, and they gave a good price on the little A Model we got, so we left happy, but I think when I play my concert over there in March I will budget my time enough to come in early and pick some of the fine goods they have in there....

You got that right Brian. The only one that I have plyed that I can say is nicer than yours is a Gilchrist A that a fellow from Australia brought here when he was on vacation. There have been a few nice teens Gibsons that I would have to hear played beside your Taggart.

By the way, the Gilchrist dated from the 70's and I think the fellow that had it got a real good price when he bought it. he was associateed with the Gippsland Acoustic Instrument Club, went by the nickname Strad. He and his wife were wonderful musicians.
