I use a Dunlop peg winder but it's obviously intended for guitar...the part that slips over the tuner is too large and bumps against the other tuners when it turns making it harder to do it fast. I haven't been able to find any that were any smaller. Is there anywhere to get these in a more mandolin friendly size?

I have a D'Addario, it has two sizes to fit large and small[er] pegs, and a built in string cutter.

I've never seen a Galli up close so I've no idea. But I know my Dunlop does not get along with mandolin machines and all of the other winders I've seen in stores (not that I've seen that many) were exactly the same. I will definitely look for that D'Addario.

Winders specifically for mandos are available from Cumberland Acoustic and Lynn Dudenbostel. I have been using a HERCO winder from Dunlop. It is a bit large over all but has the best socket for various size peg buttons. It fits both guitar and mandolin buttons.

I've got one called a ''TURBOTUNE''. It has 2 sizes of slots & the smaller of the 2 fits mando.pegs perfectly & doesn't knock the heck out of the other pegs when it's used,if it did i wouln't be using it. TURBOTUNE has it's own web site so you can check it out,

There's also one available from Elderly. They're made of wood and kind of pricey, but they last a lifetime and are really nice.

How do you get the winder and other things from Lynn? It seems like you have to wait until they come up in the classifieds...I've had no luck finding a website either...Just curious because I know he makes great stuff aside from from his mandolins...

I got the idea from one of Paul Hostetter's posts. I took an old Dunlop guitar peg winder and cut it down to a more mandolin-friendly size, then cut a piece from an old guitar pick and glued it onto the new open end. It works just fine.

    surfandstrum,
I looked up Lynn Dudenbostel of Maryville, TN in the phone book. Not sure if it's current but the number is 865-980-0084. You might try calling him.

    So what is the website?

turbotune.com doesnt' seem to work. And Google isn't helping much.
Is it the one made by Dunlop that you can use with an electric drill???

The turbotune is not made anymore. I have a Planet waves one with a head the fits large or mando sized buttons. It works fine and was cheap.

Dunlop makes the Turbotune. M123 and MF both have them for $6.95. Free ship on a $29.00 order from Music123. I just got one and other than the fact that it came in fluorescent green, it's really nice. The short slot fits mandolin keys perfectly and don't bang into the neighboring keys and the long ones are open so they work on bass keys. Worth 7 bucks if you ask me.

Edit: I see why I got it in Glow Green. I didn't specify because the picture was of a black one and I didn't know they came in any other color, so they picked a green one for me.

It's always good to recycle one of your old posts so here's one of mine:

I use an inexpensive winder called the "Jop". You start out with a standard buck and a half Jim Dunlop guitar winder, cut it two times, glue the smooth ends together with Superglue. Just for giggles I poured a little baking soda down inside and dropped some Superglue on it to add a little stiffness. Much cheaper than the wooden winders sold by just about everyone.

It's from this thread about the same subject.

I made and sold about 400 stringwinders for mandolin that I called Clydewinders. I think they were pretty good, but I never got fast enough at making them to make it worth while. Even selling them for $30 I wasn't making minimum wage. Now I just give them away as Christmas presents and nobody says, "That's too expensive." "I could make that."

Turbotune.net is a link to the Dunlop product. They must make it and own the name, and there is no r at the end of the name. Mine is just like the green one shown there.

Hey I just realized that I own one of these and never use it. The things we find at the bottom of the toolbox.

I did the same thing Mike did with the plastic Dunlop (on his suggestion from the previous post), and it worked great. Just don't do the same stupid thing I did and try the fit too soon. I accidentally got some superglue on my tuners.

You've got to let it dry or it becomes a permanent part of one tuner

The old farm shop instincts took over & duct tape, hack saw & an old dunlap winder we're involved.
SUPER glue, wish I'd thought of that.
But seriously, just some simple altering of a cheap guitar winder works OK for me.
I do not like changing Mando string's. I guess no one else does either (supply & demand) or cheap mando winders would be as common as cheap guitar winders.
    Just a thought.
