Here is another gem for sale.

I was not aware that the A4's had an ablone fleur-di-lis. #This one does.

Also the cleft in the top of the headstock is deep. Was that pattern confined to 1924?

I'm not quite sure, but it seems like the Virzi might be more accepted when it shows up in an A4 or F4 than a Loar F5. Strange. I've played a few round hole Gibsons with Virzis and most of them left me scratching my head. On the other hand, I've played several Loars with Virzi that were shockingly good... in fact a few of the Virzi Loars I've played were ( to my ears) as good or better than most non-Virzis. Quite a character this Virzi, no?

Eh, those Virzi's...and wasn't one of them married to Fischer Shipp's sister or something like that? #
Kinda makes ya wonder how they ended up in Gibsons...

Bernie....abalone fleur-de-lis' were typical in all A 4's, snakeheads or otherwise. The headstock pattern with deep cleft is typical of all snakeheads I've seen....1923, 1924, and 1925 (believe snakes were made 'till 1927.) Don't know why but 1924 A 4's, virzis or no, seem to play.

I may have missed recent price developments, but I note this one has a starting bid of $6500, but an even higher reserve. Surely putting a reserve on when bidding starts this high means that the reserve must be well above $8000, or else why bother? I thought that even a Loar-era F4 hasn't quite reached that level yet.

Any guesses on whether he will get this price?

(Very happy with my 1922 A-jr for $1000...)

I am the owner/seller of this mandolin. It is a fine sounding and playing mandolin that I recently had set up by Dr Dave Cohen. I may not be privy to the best strategies when selling on e bay but I had a $7,200.00 reserve which I thought was pretty fair. It didnt sell, maybe I should have started with a lower first bid. Anyway I had a touch of sellers remorse after listing it, and am enjoying picking on it this afternoon...Gary

Gary....didn't you have an F 2 with faux T/shell binding on the back? Do you still have it? Maybe email me off this thread if you want.
