I just want to say Howdy...I'm a beginer, but I'm fiercely dedicated, almost obsessed you could say with all things Mandolin. Just curious to know what kind of music Canadian players are into. I myself am into Bluegrass Gospel, but I'm open to anything Mando.

    Cheers,

Check out a fellow countryman of yours, Raymond Legere. Truly awesome musician.

Bruce, check out your own Andrew Collins and the Creaking Tree String Quartet for "anything Mando". They are excellent for original, highly inventive jazz. Believe Andrew also has a bluegrass band.

I think John Reischman is now an "honorary" Canadian.

    Hello from Calgary Bruce!

You have a highly regarded luthier in your town--check out the posts by OldTymer. I think he is moving shop out of the old port right now.

Also be sure and find some albums by The Undertaking Daddies from White Horse, and The Wailing Jennys and Duhks from Manitoba. Good luck on your mandolin adventure!

I believe he's a "duel-ly" now, as a result of his marriage to a Canadian.

Canadian bluegrass mandolin player Randy Hill is one of our national treasures.

Emory Lester is also living at least part of the year in Barrie, ON. He can pick a few notes.

I'm not canadian - but I remember an awesome group with a great mandolin player - I think his name was Dan Greenspoon

the Romainiacs - but they are no longer together

they did a string band version of the stones "paint it black" that was out of this world - complete with the fiddler using his bow to crash a cymbol - wild stuff.

Spirit of the West was another group that caught my attention

    and "the frantics"

I know Danny Greenspoon as primarily a guitarist who did lots and lots of sessions. It's been years since I've heard mention of The Romaniacs, a play on Romaniuk since the band was mostly from the Prairie provinces with a large population of Ukrainians. I think the fiddler was Calvin Cairns. They were a great show.

Craig Murray lives in Peterborough. My in-laws rent a cottage in the Kawarthas--does that count?

Hey Glen. If you find yourself with some free time over the next few weeks, we should play some tunes. And a huge Y-E-S on Ray Legere, my absolute favorite maritime musician. My jaw just drops every time I see him.

Speaking of Ray Legere, he has some sheet music out that is awesome, and it's specific to instrument - mando, guitar, maybe fiddle. Hip breaks to standard tunes. Also, he offers home-made mando tab packages to some of his recordings. Learn to play like Ray!
