I was just browsing the home and I was noticing that Orrin Star has opened up a beauty parlor somewhere in Maryland. I knew he could flat get after a mandolin but I had no idea he cut hair too. You go boy!

I think this discussion is based on a YouTube entry listing a "Mandolin Workshop & Salon" in MD. O's home page doesn't mention him getting into the beauty shop business...

I guess he has one foot in Brooklyn and one in MD now, since he mentions still playing with the Sultans of String in the NYC area. I did a recording with Evy Mayer in his Brooklyn studio about seven or eight years ago, and he was a fine engineer and producer, as well as his skills on a variety of instruments.

Only trouble with the studio, was that it could only function nights and weekends due to the truck noise from a nearby warehouse. I wish him the best, 30 years into the music "biz." I do remember that back in the '80's he tried combining music and stand-up comedy for awhile, so hey, maybe he is investigating a new line of work...

As a regular at Orrin's barber shop, I can tell you that he still cuts it as clean with his axe as anybody else with a razor. The guy is a one-man band with all the right notes in the right places. And the offbeat humor still surfaces at the slightest provocation.

Orrin's been showing and selling instruments for some time. His 1-day salon will display an unusual assortment of mandos.

Yes - my signature Tremolo Perm is all the rage among the society ladies here in DC. (Not.)

The "salon" idea came about because I got a call from Mark Bluett asking if he might bring some of his mandolins
down (from York, PA) to show off at my next mandolin workshop. #I thought about it some - and reckoned that
    i) just those in attendance at my workshop might be a rather small group; ii) that I knew a couple
other area builders who would like the same opportunity to show their work and iii )if we made it a free event it
would attract more people. #Hence the workshop-followed-by-mini-mando expo idea.

(Though I still play with with my NYC band, the Sultans of String, that is more of a 2-3 times a year thing than a
'dividing my time' between MD and Brooklyn thing.)

Lastly, this site rocks and I'm glad to be part of the greater mando community.
