Thinking of making up a little map thingy for mandolin contests similar to the camps/workshops page, which, after spending a bit of time updating for 2008 I'm finding is way, way easier the second year around when you don't have to replot those location coordinates. Someone asks about a list of contests every so often and it wouldn't be very difficult to maintain. Probably not so useful, don't know.

Obvious ones that come to mind:

    Winfield/Walnut Valley
Wickenburg, Four Corner States Bluegrass Festival Mandolin Contest
    MerleFest
    Tulsa State Fair/Oklahoma Championships
    Texas State Mandolin Championships
    Telluride Mandolin Contest
    Rockygrass (Colorado)
CMSA has had one in the past (I think)
    Indiana State Championships
Kansas State Picking and Fiddling Championships

    You mean "real" contests?
If you mean anything called a contest, there's Galax, the Maury River fiddlers convention, and a few other go-on-stage-play-one-tune-and-you're-done 'contests'.

Well, I think of a "real contest" as being one where the contestants play more than one tune, the judges select finalists, and the players play again, or something like that.
When 150 or so mandolin players cross the stage in rapid succession and play one tune each, then the winners are selected (and local pickers very often finish near the top), is that a "real" contest?

The ones mentioned in the first post are pretty good contests, it seems to me.

While it doesn't quite have the prestige of Winfield, I was glad to be at the Grand Targhee contests this year. Very small festival, very cool atmosphere.

Mandolin and Guitar contest at the Watermelon Park Bluegrass Festival - Winchester VA

Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention - Galax VA

I think a contest list would be great. I love playing in contests.
