Well, it's GuitarPlayerTV! (click on Concert Hall Channel for a bunch of stuff with Frank Vignola).

You know, a lot of guitar geeks listened to the DGQ because of Tony Rice. I suppose turnabout is fair play!

ps While you're there, check out the TK Smith/Jeremy Wakefield clip (of the Jimmy Bryant/Speedy West classic "Stratosphere Boogie"), it's insane! I want me one of them stutter switches!

pps I'm still working on an emando version of the Children of Bodom clip, "###### #### #### from ####ing Finland!" (very NSFW)

FWIW I think Josh Pinkam's playing with the Frank Vignola Quintet is nothing short of brilliant.

Jump down to "A-Blues" in the list and note the way he holds the pick. Maybe it's the perspective, but it looks a bit non-standard. Whatever kind of grip he has, it works.

I noticed his grip also. Very Thile-esque judging from the videos of Chris I've seen recently.

I've "tried" utilizing that grip and it's surprisingly easy to use for downstrokes with very little grip pressure.

Looks like you can download an album with Josh on mando at Frank Vignola's download site. VMDownloads.

There are some other interesting looking downloads as well.

Spoke to Josh recently at Riverhawk. He has a solo album coming out soon recorded at Les Paul's studio.

Wow, not that this has anything to do with his playing. . . but has anyone seen a picture of the Pinkham family?

Seems like it would work well with light strings. With so little flesh on the pick, I would think 11's or 12's would knock the pick right out of your hand.

He also provides a great example of someone who turns the palm of his fretting hand toward the bridge. There's a recent post on jazzmando.com on this technique and its positive effect on tone.

man the kid is incredible. He sounds so much like Thile though it will be exciting when he finds his own voice. Unbelievable chops though.

I think Thile is going to influence young players for a long time, but I think Josh is his own player. He has a great sense of groove. Some of the ideas he plays on those tracks aren't perfectly thought out, but it is all recorded live so I am willing to cut him some slack.

He blows me away with his playing on this track:

Teh Frank Vignola Quintet has a recording coming out in February. I hope Josh is a part of that project.

Josh is prominently featured. I have a pre-release copy obtained at one of Vignola's concerts.
