I presently have a nicely broken in y2k which has a very sweet sound and nice sustain. #I was wondering if anyone could comment on any differences in sound and playablility between the y2k and the aspen. #I seem to be playing mostly Celtic music. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. sorry...made a mistake in the post title...was wanting to compare the Aspen and y2k.
Their common features are a flat spruce top and identical dimensions. #The Y2K has mahogany back, sides and neck. #The Aspen 1 has maple back and sides, and a mahogany neck. #And the Aspen 2 has maple back, sides and neck (plus a slightly better case, I believe).
In terms of playability, they're virtually the same. #In terms of sound, the Y2K has the drier, woodier tone usually associated with mahogany.
Unless you're MASing for the slightly brighter sound associated with maple, I'd keep what you got. #Besides, a new Aspen 2 is twice the price of a new Y2K.
Thanks for the info and advice. I went in a played several fairly expensive mandos and came home impressed with the sound of my y2k. MAS is a terrible thing but I think I have mine beat for now.
