I played a new Ellis F5 over the weekend and it had a really cool tailpiece call a James. It was very high quality and it swings open for ease of changing strings. Just want to know what folks think of them Thank you, Nick

It is the easiest tailpiece to change strings on. I had a collings with a cast tailpiece and another mandolin with an Allen, and both were such a pain to change strings. I love my old Gibson with the standard stamped tailpiece much better than all the fancy ones, but I just got a BRW a few months ago with a James and I love it.![]()
The James tailpiece is a great step into the future. I have been using them since they became available and have yet to find a problem.
Love it!

The James tailpiece really spoils you with the ease of string change, great design/weight, no rattle...
My Arches came with one. It's the best tailpiece I've found.
i have one on my daley and of all the other tp i have owned - collings, gibson stamped, monteleone, allen - it is by far the best. easiest string changes.
that said - i have a customized hamlett tp coming on my voight and am looking forward to that as well.

I don't have one (but want one) and one neat feature it has is that you can close the cover to keep the loop in place of the string that you are tightening up at the tuning peg.
I stepped up on the platform, the man gave me the news;
He said: "You must be joking son, where did you get those shoes...."
"Your man doesn't sound so good!!"

I put a James tailpiece on my F-5 a couple of years ago and just love it. And I believe it improved the sound just a little too. I highly recommend it!
The Bill James tailpiece is the best I've seen.
Simply the best tailpiece for the mandolin.

I have used them since Bill gave me the first prototype to take to IBMA a couple of years ago. Just about every builder uses them. For me there is no other tailpiece.
Two thumbs up
A well built improvement over those ole cleated things.

Boy, this thread has been one of the most positive endorsements of a mandolin related product I've seen in years.
Congratulations to Bill James for a great product!

added one to my BRW and I love it!
Thanks Hans! The James tailpiece success story started here at Mandolin Cafe, with a thread about new experimental tailpiece including o rings... I'm very glad I ordered one of the first ones in december 2004. #Originally Posted by (Hans @ Sep. 25 2007, 18:04)
Worth every penny.
I especially like that its light in weight compared to a cast model. I found the cast type had a muting effect on the instrument I put one on.

I just bought 2 from FQMS.com. One for my JBovier and one for my Flatiron. I had an Allen on the JBovier and trying to change strings at gigs was nearly impossible. It was like I had to have a third hand. Anyway, I replaced the Allen on the JBovier and WOW! Great design, great construction and easy to use. My only issue is with the initial placement of the small rubber rings. I have to admit I didn't have vaseline to lubricate them but I used a little 3-in-1 oil. It took a long time to get them to fit. I am not sure they are seated but they remain in place now. Other than the initial install, this is a GREAT tailpiece!![]()
Just got a new mandolin that has one. First James that I own. It's the best! No rattles from this thing.

LOVE them! Traditional looks, very easy to change strings, and great workmanship. They come gold or silver plated and you can get them custom engraved. I have one on my Kimble.

What everybody else said +1. Form + function doesn't get any better in the mandolin tailpiece world. JMO of course.
