I was at Gryphon on Friday and they just got a batch of Big Muddy mandolins. There as one M-11 with wide neck, really nice sound. I didn't get to try the rosewood M-4 because it was not prepped yet. But now that I see them on the website I'm going to definitely head out there when I get a chance to try them.

I definitely prefer them to bowlbacks, as they sound similar (especially the rosewood), but do not have the big protruding bowl. Maybe if I was skinnier I wouldn't care.

A good friend of mine, fiddler Jamie Gans, has been having some fun playing mandolin and considering what to buy. He called Mike Dulak and Mike offered to send Jamie a rosewood Big Muddy to try. It should be here this week, and I'll get to
have some playing time with it. I'll report back on that one if you like.

I've played several Mid-Mo's and briefly had a Mid-Mo M-70 octave mandolin, very nice. I really enjoy Mike's wide-neck option.

Have some more fun at Gryphon!

Okay, I will. I like the Rosewood also. Too bad they don't have a walnut to compare with. Incidentally, they let you test it out with a thin pointy pick. So everything sounds bright and sharp. I like the more mellow Rosewood sound, so I need to bring my own pick next time.

you mean you don't always have a pick or two of your favorites in your pocket at all times?

I was at Gryphon several months ago playing through all of the Bug Muddy's. That had all but the M-11 in stock, but none of the wide necks. I liked the M-4 and M-3 the best, and between them I favored the Walnut -- It had a more complex tone to my ears, and was a hair louder as well.

Now that they have a wide neck to play with, I think I might need to head back down this weekend to check them out. (If I drop the wife off at the Stanford Shopping Centre first, that should buy me a few hours to play with all of their mandolins. )
