I'd say the least common denominator consists of people that keep using this forum to make fun of others. Clearly on display.

Well, we're witnessing a new genre wavegrass I'd need at least $100 to wear the hat on stage though!

Definitely wouldn't be the Loar. Appears to be something with an endpin jack.

Doesn't really look like an electric at all to me, looks like the rig he uses at the big nickel creek shows, just without the wireless. Probably his "beater' dude?

    Anyway that was awesome.

Ya gotta wear the plastic flowerpot hat to do Devo covers!
maybe the hats come as a bonus,
with paying the performance copyright fees to play their songs.

entau, you were thinking of the bulk of what comes out of commercial country music,of late, not a one off band like DEvo.

    Is that a meta-statement?

Devo was short for "devolution" and was intended as a jab at the meathead cock-rock music fans that were predominant at the time of Devo's formation. Devo's quirky, witty, sarcastic, nerdy, and downright odd-for-the-time music was a direct response to lowest-common-denominator arena rock.

So, it's ironic that you appear to be assailing Thile and SCI for having a fun, improvised goof-off on a tune that was written by a band whose formation was heavily based on mocking the least common denominator of empty rock music.

Crunch...couldn't agree more. I'll take it one step further. Mark Mothersbaugh, the man behind Devo, is actually a brilliant compser and has written some amazing mandolin parts. Check out the Wes Anderson film soundtracks...Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums etc.

I thought Thile's wild solo sounded great -

and I never knock anyone for doing anything different or out of the box -

Thile should do what Thile wants to do and not worry about what anyone thinks

but - I thought the music sounded terrible ( regardless of the cover tune) and if I was at the show - I probably would have walked out.

I doubt the wild jumping crowd really cared what was happening on stage -as long as it was easy to follow

but hey - sheep need leaders

If anything it sounds like Chris Thile & Co. are making fun of the music, themselves and life in general. #

I remember seeing that Nickel Creek video that showed them covering a Brittany Spears tune!!!!

That was some great material and the crowd loved it!!!!

    ...my 2 cents...

...keep 'em coming!!!! # # Life needs laughter and the occasional walk down memory lane #

I was at that show, and I don't consider myself a sheep!

The crowd loved it because it was a fun cover, and done in complete sillyness. Music conveys a TON of emotions, why not include sillyness in there too?

From the tone of your post I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you've never been to a Cheese show, and plain and simply just don't get it.

I actually find your comments fairly insulting, which is why I made the original statement above.

I thought of that too ... but the pickguard isn't right for a Sullivan electric. He used abbreviated pickguards flush with the body; this is a standard pickguard raised off the body. It's hard to see whether the instrument has F-holes, what with the guy jumping in front of Chris just as the camera zooms in.

It could, of course, be Michael Kang's Gilchrist.

definitely looks like solid no f holes to me. pause on eighth second to see bottom and tenth second to see top. #no hole. wonder what it is. probably one of kang's electrics.

Hm. Possibly an early Rono. He made a few F-shaped 8-strings early on. It's been alleged that Kang has 30 Ronos.

I would have loved to been there..

SCI was part of the reason I got turned on to the mandolin...

Granted, as soon as I listened to Dawg, Bush, Big Mon, Jethro, etc, I didn't really (need to) listen to the Cheese anymore!

For me, I'll take the mando anyway I can get it! (especially if Thile is involved!)
