Now there's something you don't see every day- unless maybe you're a firefighter.

I'm guessing the seller may have acquired it at a fire sale.

I have seen a few playable restorable mandolins used as decoration by those who don't know, in once case a beautiful bowlback entirely painted powder blue, to go with a mantle decoration.

Point is, when I see un-restorable un-playable mandolins - I hope they are saved for those who want a mandolin motif in their decoration, so the decorators won't have to use mandolins that could have been heard as well as seen.

I wonder what such extreme heat would do to the cellular structure of the tonewoods. Perhaps some luthiers could jump in here with some expertise on that subject. If the wood were not so damaged, burned instruments might be worthy of restoration.

Here's a picture of Dweezil Zappa with his Stratocaster that was burned onstage by Jimi Hendrix...he had it for sale a couple years ago, turned down a $500,000 offer.

The thing that really scares me off is that headstock! It looks like a really ###### import from the 60's or 70's and NOT a true vintage mandolin. Your opinions ?

I "improve" mandolins all the time this way. Here's a pic of my shop apprentice fixin' to make a '70's Conquisidor into a flamin' good mandolin.

I can't say about this one, but several of the old (vintage?) mandolins had some pretty ..um, well, ..um interesting headstock shapes.

What got me is, it looks like it was never much to begin with, then it went through a fire, & now he has the nerve to list it for sale. If I had it & wanted to experiment in luthiery, I might use it, but PAY for THIS??

Is it just me, or is this not the first time that a non-musician/antique dealer has listed a mandolin auction, and thought to include a phrase like "THE STRINGS ARE ALL THERE" as a selling point.

hey common... It still has all it's strings!
Didn't Harmony have a headstock like that in the 50's?
it's a box with strings. If it's a well made box, It'll play?
