Very sad to say that the great singer Tommy Makem, the man who wrote "4 Green Fields", has died of cancer in his New Hampshire home. #I suspect like many others, my first exposure to Irish music was through the Clancey Brothers and though the music has grown a lot since their heyday, I still have a #fondness for a lot of that stuff and profound respect and gratitude for Mr. Makem. #A solid performer of great integrity, he will always be admired and missed.

    My how time passes.

I remember him and the rest well. Singing with clenched fists in those big heavy sweaters. They must have roasted under the lights.

Very sad to hear this. I especially loved his music when he was a duo with Liam Clancy.

My first introduction to Irish music was from my mom playing a Clancy Brothers/Tammy Makem live LP over, and over, and over back in the late 1950's. #She sat in front of the record player speaker for hours one long-ago Saturday trying to get the lyrics to Moonshiner, Tim Finnegan's Wake, Brennan on the Moor, etc. #

FWIW, most of my experience with Irish music came while I was a grade school student at a Baltimore County, Md. parish school, from the nuns of the Sisters of Mercy (Northern Province) right off the boat from Ireland. #I'd go to school and listen to English with 'the lilt' (the nuns would talk between themselves in English mixed in with more-than-a-smattering of Irish Gaelic), then return home to hear East Baltimore-accented English and Polish!

Sad to hear. Back in the early 60s My folks would check all the Clancy's records out from the library. I can still remember all the words to all the songs. I still pull out their tapes every St. Patty's Day and sing along. Tommy's voice was always my favorite.
She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

A great influence on Irish vocal music in America, an excellent songwriter, and a wonderful entertainer whether with the Clancys or as a solo. He will be greatly missed.

Very very sad to hear of Mr. Makem's passing.

Tommy Makem and the Clancey Bros. was my introduction to Celtic music years ago. They have always been a favourite.

    RIP Tommy.

This is indeed very sad. Tommy Makem was also one of the early and steady supporters of Milwaukee's Irish Fest (happening this weekend), and the organizers this year have put together some nice concerts in his honor.

The schedule for the weekend, along with the tribute events for TM, is at http://www.irishfest.com.

Special note for mandolinists: the great Mick Moloney and a very impressive fiddler are playing this afternoon at 3:15.

May the road rise up to meet you,
Let the wind be at your back,
And may you be in Heaven 15 minutes before the Devil knows you're dead.
