Tennessean article
that article made me so mad i could barely read it - just a shame - i'll edit out anything else i have to say about this - but i bet he doesnt even serve 7 years.
Too bad he didn't stay deported!
Sadly, this sort of thing puts the whole discussion about the Southern border into brutal focus. Quoting the article, "deported from the U.S. three times and allowed to leave voluntarily on eleven other occasions".
Boy, the Tennessean is fast! #I just returned from the courthouse less than an hour ago myself. #It took pretty much the entire day (9:00 - 3:00) to get through this sentencing hearing, what with late showing parties, delays, and all.
Many people showed up at the proceedings to provide support for Charlie, and especially for his wife Susan and daughter Anna. #Several people had written letters to the judge, remarking on what Charlie meant to them, and how the loss of Charlie has affected their lives. The judge commented that he had read all of the letters.
Susan Derrington had prepared a letter, which she read when she was called up. #Very hard to maintain compusure just listening to it. #Many broke down. Susan is a very strong woman, and got through the reading of her true feelings of loss. #There was an interpreter, and I am glad the scumbag got to hear every word. Susan, you are a champion! After the sentencing, one of the attorneys told me it was the most moving statement of this type that she had ever heard.
The Tennessean put an odd spin on the sentencing. #The judge did give the full amount of sentencing allowed for this crime (17-25 years). #He could have added two years for fleeing the scene and not rendering aid, but that was the only part he left out. #Of course, had it been my decision, he would have gotten a lot more than 25 years, and no parole, thank you very much.
Being eligible for parole in 7 1/2 years is not the same as being paroled in 7 1/2 years. #Hopefully this man will remain in prison for a long, long time, and think hard about his long list of mistakes, especially the last one, on a daily basis.
Whatever the verdict, there is no real victory in the sentencing anyway. #I guess I walked away from the proceedings feeling somewhat good that the judge did give the maximum sentence. #And, now the vermin will be moved from jail to prison, which is where he belongs.
Hopefully, this will give some level of closure to the Derrington family. #I know this was a hard day for them.

That's hard to read. Kind of makes you numb.

I expect he will be deported after his sentence is complete. Mr Derrngton's death is a real loss for our mandolin community and that statement pales in comparison to the loss to his family.
Irresponsible alcohol consumption has caused a lot of heartache and death. I do not drink myself, but have felt the effects of alcoholism in a close family member, now deceased. He drove drunk on a daily basis, had a number of convictions and accidents. Thankfully no physical injuries for it.
There won't walk another on this earth, the like of Charlie Derrington.
To use this tragedy as a justification for any sort of criticism of immigration laws or legislation is somewhat shortsighted. I think, if one does the research, you will find that drunk driving knows no race, creed or color.
Thanks a lot Steve for attending the court proceedings, and giving us that thoughtful report.

Call me shortsighted then. If he hadn't been in the country, the accident wouldn't have happened.Originally Posted by (Mteresko @ July 20 2007, 20:42)

I was not able to be in the court today because I had to be in a court in another county for someone also. I talked to Susan and she said she has had a real weight and burden lifted from her now that this is over. She feels she can get on with her life and close this terrible chapter. Charlie was a wonderful man, and a great friend. I miss him every day of my life and still cannot believe I cannot call him just to talk about stuff. I have fought very hard not to get angry or bitter over this and so far have done well. Knowing the killer will not be able to do this to anyone again for a very long time does help a lot. The unfortunate part is this is not his first DUI in the USA. Not only is he an illegal alien, but he flaunts the laws of our nation. I find that offensive.
I have felt for many years that the first offense of DUI should bring a mandatory one year prison sentence and a second offense a mandatory five year prison sentence with no possibility of parole. That would certainly slow the DUI rate. Unfortunately, our politicians will never do anything like that becuase they too often like to drink and drive. Enough of my high horse. Thank you for listening and goodnight my friend, Charlie Derrington. You can now rest in peace!
Have a Great Day!

I don't know about you guys, but I feel some feelings coming up that started on August 1, 2007, the day of this terrible tragedy. #Feelings of sadness, anger, missing a dear friend. #Feelings I thought I had worked through, but still seem to be there, somehow just as strong as ever.
You know what we need? #A shot of Charlie! #One good thing that happened today #(besides putting the bad guy away for a long time) was learning about the video I have linked below. #My apologies if this has been brought up before. #Like I say, it was news to me. #I just got to see if for the first time a few minutes ago. #Lots of people in this video were in the courthouse today. #Family, friends, even Big Joe!
Sure is good to see Charlie playing the mandolin again....

With due respect, and not to lead this where we don't want it to go, but "immigration" has nothing whatsoever to do with "race, creed or color." It isn't the fact that Charlie's killer is Mexican, it is the fact that he was in this country illegally which is the issue. I wouldn't care if it had been a caucasian named Henry Smyth-Jones from England, he was not allowed to be here, and if he had not been here, the accident would not have happened.

You are 100% right Jim. Our borders are not protected. Our current laws are not inforced. We are being invaded.

Jim, you are right on the money. What a tragedy. I lost a friend on July 10 in Hollywood, FL. She was hit by a druck driver going 80 mph. She never knew what hit her. These people driving drunk just don't get the message. The punishment must not be harsh enough. It's senseless tragedy.

So you post a song about drinking? I understand that Charlie's in the video, but you might rethink that a little.Originally Posted by (Steevarino @ July 20 2007, 22:09)
A few Tennessee legislators have recently started an effort to toughen up our DUI laws, and I'm all in favor of it. We might also think for a moment about the dangers of motorcycles. You can be a very safe rider, but you never know what someone else is going to do when you have no protection around you.

Well Crowder,
To tell you the truth, the link you came up with (drinking song) didn't even enter my mind. #I was just happy to see some footage of an old friend that I miss a lot. #Lots of other familiar faces in the video too. #That was pretty much it.
Sorry if it offended you. #It certainly didn't offend me. #Also, I don't know how to "rethink" something I have already posted.
Oh yeah, motorcycles are dangerous. #Thanks for the heads-up on that one ....
FYI, there is not a lot of footage available of Charlie playing or singing. #The only other thing I could find is a 20 sec. clip of him playing a Loar at work, and I think most of us have seen that one.
Have a nice night,
Steve
Steve thanks for being there and for supporting Charlie’s family. Unfortunately I know how difficult the day must have been for you. Thanks for posting that clip. I’ve seen it before but it was nice watching it again. Take care (and all of Charlie’s close friends) in this difficult time. Here’s a big hug for you and Carol from your friend Gail.

This is a terrible trajedy that has layers of culpability. Yes the guy obviously had a problem with alcohol and yes he was a drunk driver but that it cannot be overlooked that above and beyond EVERYTHING the scumbag was an illegal alien who has been deported FOURTEEN TIMES?Originally Posted by (Mteresko @ July 20 2007, 20:42)
If our borders were secure like they should be and our immigration laws been enforced in the first place and the scum bag deported (what the Hades is this voluntarily told to leave the country?) he would have not been here to have killed Charlie.
I'm sorry yall, this article makes me SICK! FOURTEEN TIMES? This accident should not have happened.... PERIOD!
To see this as a drunk driving problem only is very shortsighted at best... blind to the HUGE problem that our country is facing at worst.
And seven years before parole? Thats outrageous! Everyone knows you never get parole on the first try, sometimes on the second round with most getting it on the third try as long as the guy hasn't done anything while in prison. They usually make you wait a year in between parole hearings that means the murderer will be getting out in about 9 or 10 years. Thats not very long for taking someone's life.
And yes he will be deported upon release from jail ... but what good is that if our borders are not secure and you can just walk across them anytime you want?
And now my tax dollars get to support him ... GREAT!
I think he should have gotten the death penalty!!!!
Let's not cheapen the memory of Charlie Derrington with rants about border security, immigration and other matters which are clearly forbidden within the rules of this forum. I will not further tolerate some of the hot button issues which are getting bantered about here.
Well, someone needs to write a memorable song about it called "Charlie's Last Ride" and then find a band/performer who is not terrified of touching anything "controversial" (i.e. political) to record the thing.
Thanks for you post Joe. It's a shame when a wonderful person in inexplicably and unexpectedly taken away.Originally Posted by (Big Joe @ July 20 2007, 21:36)

Very well stated. #I hope of you folks who live in the Nashville area will please make the time to testify against this "person" whenever he comes up for parole.Originally Posted by
