    Hi there
I am working on "Kentucky Mandolin" and trying to get the bpm up into the top end of the dial, but I cannot seem to get a Gm chord that I can chop nicely while the guitar goes for it. The best effort is 7810x. 0013 is too open and 355x doesn't ring....What did Monroe do?

Try 755, or 75. You just want the whoomp.

I use 0013 on this one. And kinda chop the treble strings a little. Makes for a nice interesting change of pace.

7556 - 7513 -This one's a bit of a reach, but you gotta do it some day.

7513 is what I use for KM. Puts your fingers in all the right places to pick. It's a good one to play fast. Always liked that song.

I am with Alan: whoomp, monroe, muscle, who needs thirds?, 75 on the barking strings.

On the video with Butch Robins at Austin City Limits in 1981, Bill appears and sounds like he is playing 0-5-1-x for that chop. I can definitely hear the low G droning. I use 7-5-1-3 for that chop, but I probably don't play the E string much.

    Ok, the winner is....

    0-5-1-x

the tune just jumps out of it, and it is clearly Monroe

lucky runners up are the 7-5-5 and the 7-5-1-3 until the index finger goes on strike

Seriously, what an amazing series of answers and so quickly. As a geographically challenged mando learner I really appreciate the help!!
    Thanks
