Good price on howard frye's "gypsy mandolin!"

I just saw this CD for $15 USD at an eBay Express store, which reminded me that at one time this was a hard-to-find CD. I did a few checks and found it used at Amazon for $78 (!!!), but then checked out Smithsonian Folkway's site and found it for only $9.99 -- plus you can now download it from there as well.

In case anyone interested still needs to add this gem to their collection, here is the link.

This best I could find for a hard copy about 2 months ago was $15 plus $3 s&h.

Perhaps the $9.99 price is for the softcopy version -- my apologies to anyone visiting this thread hoping for $9.99 USD for a hardcopy of this excellent recording. (But $15 still beats $78 for a used CD at Amazon.

By the way, the only way to know is to click the link, the wording reads like 9.99 is the price either way. You'd think the Smithsonian would be above misleading advertising

Czardas, wonderful tune, as gypsy as it gets. My combo opens a medley w/ that and seques into "Tipsy Gypsy" (apologies for leaping continents and centuries between the tunes, but they rock together! Or swing, or...) JBo

I've just bought the download, and it may be worth mentioning that you get the tracks in both FLAC and MP3 format, without DRM, so you can burn your own lossless CD. No artwork files, though.

Track 2 of this recording, as well as the album title itself, also use the Csárdás spelling.

McGann in Irish Gaelic is spelled something like MacGubhainne- pronounced "Shar-day"

No matter how you spell it, I find it interesting (actually, I was quite surprised when I found out) that this "most gypsy" tune -- a Hungarian dance -- was written by a Neapolitan composer -- Vittorio Monti (1868 - 1922).

Even Apollon gets it wrong. In the intro to the recording that I have, he calls it "a beautiful Russian song".

Every half decent restourant that caters for the tourists in Budapest - with a gypsy band - plays the Monti Csárdás, it is a showpiece.

Once again, the Cafe leads me to more great music that I hadn't heard - thanks for turning me on to Howard Frye. Just listened to it on Rhapsody, it's great stuff.

I was curious what mandolin he was using, so googled it and found the info at Dan Beimborn's mandolin archive site. You guys may already have know this, but I didn't. It's a 1924 Snakehead Ajr.

Yeah, he was special, his mandolin was special, he died way too young. There is a biography of him available, it's on Amazon as well as Best Music Source at ebay.

By the way, if you by the CD instead of the download, you don't get much info, cover photo of Frye & his A2, & a track list with playing times. That's it.
