A few weeks ago I asked for good music to listen to being new to mandolin and this was recommended by some of you.

I have got to say that the music on this album
is absolutley superb. The tones and melodies they produce are exquisite and I can't stop listening to it.

What genre would this music be named under and are there other albums of a similar quality?
    Regards

    Phil T

Don't think it fits directly into any genre but if you liked it , you would probably also like

    Mondo Mando - David Grisman
    Manzanita - Tony Rice
    Common Chord - David Grisman

I think the concept was to pay homage to the music from the period that the instruments were built. The first Tone Poems with Tony Rice has what I would call Americana....starting with early 1900's folk melodies, combined with a bit of Bill Monroe....I learned Watson's Blues from this CD.....a Django Reinhardt Gypsy swing tune......and several Grisman originals.

You might enjoy the 2nd of the series with Brit Martin Taylor on guitar. It is more jazz flavored, but an excellent addition to any mandolin music collection. If you like Grisman's tunes, try the first David Grisman Quintet album, or Hot Dawg......both classics.

Don't forget the companion book transcribed by John Carlini - great stuff indeed.

Try some other Acoustic Disc releases - you can find a list of all their albums here and can stream tracks here. You would probably like the rest of the Tone Poems/Poets series...I also like Doc & Dawg and Shady Grove for duets with vocals.
