"A Place in the Heart" is a really nice mando/guitar duet.

I saw the light
Forever Young by Bob Dylan:
May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
You can't see your future in a rear view mirror.

At my church, the standard is "You Have Put on Christ" by Stephen Dean. It's a nice tune and they lyrics are specifically about baptism.
The one I really like, though, is "Come to the Water," by John Foley. There is an MP3 of it here:

"Be Thou My Vision" is a beautiful mandolin/guitar hymn.
John Ylvisaker has a piece called "I was there to hear your borning cry." It's published in the Lutheran hymnal "With One Voice." The chords are very easy - mostly G and D.
The text is:
"I was there to hear your borning cry, I'll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well; in a blaze of light you wandered off to find where demons dwell.
When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; you were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. If you find someone to share you time and you join your hearts as one, I'll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun.
In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I'll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I've begun. When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes, I'll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise.
I was there to hear your borning cry, I'll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized to see your life unfold."
Very sappy, very religious, but you did say it was a baptism.
Ya know, "Forever Young" is not a bad fit.
Is this an infant baptism or is your daughter an older kid making a profession of faith? Are you looking for an instrumental tune or something with words?
My buddy Ric Blair (http://ricblair.com) has a great song about his mother's baptism. It's called "The Baptism," naturally.

I wholeheartedly second that. The triditional Celtic lyrics are great too, and in the public domain. There is a great mando/guitar instrumental of that tune on The Buckhannon Brothers latest CD, "Back Home Again." There is an MP3 clip of it on thier site:Originally Posted by

How about Down In The River To Pray? Seems appropriate.

"Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn’t know that so it goes on flying anyway."
Newell A5 #37, Glenn F5 #66, Eastman 615 #537,
If you want a nice tune (no words), you could use Josefin's Dopvals (baptismal waltz) by Roger Tallroth of Vasen... it's recorded in some other places too, including a nice version by Natalie MacMaster.

If you're gonna walk on thin ice, you might as well dance!
Absolutely love Josephine's Dopfels. It was composed for a child's baptism.
You guys are GREAT! #Thanks for the ideas and keep them coming. #My daughter Bella (our first child) is 4 months old. #We are going to have a small (family and friends and my wife's pastor when she was a child, our current pastor) gathering at a mountain creek/stream and waterfall and a picnic with some music this on saturday afternoon. #(I will do what I can on the mandolin and others on the guitar, and then sunday for church service we will play the music we did at the creekside ceremony. #I am not too into the organized religion thing too much but my wife and her family are and the outdoors thing is what I am bringing to it and would make it very special to me and hopefully my daughter in the future. Hopefully the mountain water isn't too cold when she gets dunked. #However these bluegrass gospels can get me to church more often. #Being new to this type of music (bluegrass/folk and the like) it is better than striking gold learning and listening to this amazing acoustic music. Thanks for everyone's input!
John
How about "River of Jordan"?
I've used "Little Hands" by Jonathan Edwards. If interested its on the Seldom Scene/Jonathan Edwards Blueridge CD.

"Baptism" was a great Duo song put out by Kenny Chesney and Randy Travis. I believe it was the last tune found on one of Chesney's CD's (not sure which one). We had a big Baptism at our church and this song was used and went over great. Keep in mind it's more of a "Country" tune (which includes some drums) but given the right arrangements acoustically it may serve just fine.
Listen to the lyrics... it does apply to a young person. In Kenny's case, a young boy.
'Tis better to know that you have a True Enemy than to know to have a False Friend "...(quoted by unknown).
I like to sing the song "I am a child of God" It is a beautiful short song of three verses.
I am a child of God, and He has sent me here
Has given me a earthly home with parents kind and dear
I am a child of God, and so my needs are great
Help me to understand his words, before it grows to late.
I am a child of God, rich blessings are in store,
If I but learn to do his will, I'll live with Him once more.
(ch) Lead me, guide me, walk beside be, help me find the way, teach me all that I must do, to live with Him someday.
Lee
The song I'm currently working on is Andy Leftwich's version of "Jesus Loves Me" that can be found on his album-Ride. I got the tab for it on Mandozine. A simple yet powerful tune.
Lets all go down to the river
Another very nice piece I've heard is "Another Child to Hold". Sorry, I can't find the lyric.

Here are a few that I started working on for next month..
- I Saw The Light (Hank Williams Sr. version)
- Shall We Gather at the River
- Are You Washed in the Blood (Randy Travis has great bluegrassy version, if only I could sing...)
- I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry
Also thinking about anything Ralph Stanley. #Now that I am looking into this stuff Ralph Stanley's music is blowing my mind. #I am like a kid in a candy store... great stuff. #Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
Just as a humerous suggestion (which I haven't seen any yet)..."The Baptism of Jesse Taylor"

Sticking with the humor:
Handel's Water Music.
(sorry, I just couldn't help myself.)
"The River", by Brian Eno on Eno and Cale's Wrong Way Up album is an interesting song Eno wrote on the occasion of his daughter's birth. #It's got water and it's got newborn, but may be a little more new age than Christian in its spirituality.
THE RIVER
So deep in the water
Sleep, dark as the night
Somehow it seems it was all another dream
Soon dissolved in the light.
Oh, we were by the waterline.
Vague, the song of the night.
Innocent to all the peasant gods with you,
So, we drink to be renewed.
On the long, deep river
Where the moorhens cry
As the first sun quivers in the open sky...
Oh, she came down the river.
Soon, all the leaves were still.
The current was strong and the river was so long.
So, we drink to be renewed.
In the long cool evening,
Where the peacocks shiver
And the boat starts down the silver river way...
I remember you saying,
As her deep eyes opened,
In the first light seeing her,
"Here is someone new".
