    I suppose there is some justification for removing and replacing inferior Tuning Keys on a new mandolin, and there may be a number of folks who have "Name" preference (such as Grover for example), but doesn't the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" have a place in the discussion?

    Would YOU, by default, when buying a mid-range Pacrim, change the Tuning Keys?

    I changed mine only because I changed from gold hardware to silver. I prefer the look of silver to gold.

    In my mind if you want to add value to an inexpensive mandolin all you have to do is ad a set of Waverly Tuners and as long as we're at it a James Tailpiece.

    Truthfully, changing any component on any mandolin, inexpensive or expensive is a personal choice you make. Even if it's not broken you can change things just because it makes you feel better about owning the instrument. If you want to upgrade something, go for it.

    Ourgang: I was surprised at the change you stated from Gold to Silver. I would have thought you'd (or someone else) might go from Silver to Gold. Is it because Gold is usually "Plated" and therefore, will wear off and look bad?

    Mike: yup. That's why I added the Armrest from Doug Edwards, (not exactly a "change" of an existing part of the mando, but certainly a more permanent addition type thing). Interesting thought, however, to consider changing the Tailpiece. I've seen threads where folks talked about it, but "I" haven't tried it.

    Yes(!) and that is a good observation, IMO.

    No, see above.
    The reasons for changing tuners are;

    1.The old ones are broken, 2.the old ones are damaged too badly to work well, 3.the old ones are worn out (can happen with old tuners that were never lubed or properly cared for), 4.you want a different plating color or finish, 5.you're a "compulsive" tinkerer/hot-rodder with a set of screwdrivers and you just can't resist, 6.your mandolin needs a set up and won't tune easily and/or hold a tune well, so you conclude that the tuners are defective, 7.you just want a different look or a more expensive set of tuners for whatever reason.

    When I said "silver" I only meant the color, they're probably nickel plated?? My preference is as I stated above, that I just think the "silver" looks more vintage and I just like the looks of them. Of course I changed the tailpiece and the adjustment wheels on the bridge as well.

    I think John's #5 above describes most people who swap out gears, although they collectively cover it all, brilliantly.

    Would I, by default, when buying a mid-range Pacrim, change the Tuning Keys? Heck no, I'd lube and adjust them and play the mandolin. Putting on a fancier set of machines is like putting mag wheels on a model A.

    For a Pac-Rim: no - the cost ratio is not worth it. For my mandolins: yes, I prefer a certain brand and that is what I use. All tuners are not alike. Just like other parts we buy for our instruments, tuners can be upgraded or swapped out.
