Since the Miscellaneous Forum branch is not currently available for new threads, I'm posting here. Hope it's okay.

Am I the only person who has annoying problems with the madocafe site? I use Firefox and configure it to open ALL links in a new tab.
When I click on any of the text characters of any ‘thread title’ to open the thread, what happens is that the link opens in the SAME tab (which means I need to hit the BACK button to go to the next thread) AND an new tab opens with the identical thread. So I actually have 2 copies of the same page in my browser.

Interestingly, if I click somewhere within the block of space of the table which holds the text name of the thread, the thread opens in the same tab as before, but a second tab does NOT open.

The only way I can get the thread to simply open in a new tab (like I want) is to RIGHT-CLICK on the link and click “Open in a New Tab”. This becomes VERY cumbersome after a while.

I’m hoping that something can be done to the programming of the board to fix this. I have NEVER had this problem on ANY other board.
Am I missing something? Can anything be done to help me open each thread in a new tab within Firefox by simply clicking on the link?

Sorry for the complicated description, but I wanted to be as clear as possible. Any thoughts??

    Thanks,
    Phil

I use firefox, but don't have any problems that you describe. I suspect its in one of your settings.

Well.... I've suspected so, also. But.... I've haven't been able to find a problem.
    Any specific suggestions???
Do you use tabbed browsing? If you click on the thread title, do you get a fresh tab every time? If so, what are your settings under the options/tabs settings?

    Sorta the same with Safari.

Open something in a new tab and the last tab goes to the same thing.

    Boring, but not tragic.

Thanks for mentioning it. #I wish it wasn't so..

and I can't make Firefox do as you describe no matter how I try. I am on a Mac, though, so maybe there's something different about it. I have Firefox/Preferences/Tabs set to open new pages in a new tab.

I use Safari with no problems. Click a link, it opens in the same tab as you would expect. Command-click a link (Or Ctrl-click/Right-click and select "Open Link in New Tab)", it opens in a new tab, the original tab is unaffected. Works for me...

I'm using TabMix Plus extension with Firefox and I have every setting that I can find, set for "open in new tab". That's for pop-ups, links, EVERYTHING!
In spite of that, I get duplicate pages as described above. This is the ONLY forum that this happens on. And I go to at least a half dozen or more forums regularly.

I know it's not the end of the world. It's just annoying that I have to right click and select "open in new tab" every time I go to a new page. I can't help but think that there's something different about the way the forum software is configured on the server since I have NEVER encountered this problem elsewhere.

Again, I know it's not a big thing; just a thorn under my saddle.
I'll now resume my regular mando compulsions.

It may have to do with how the page is built? I have my settings on Firefox to open links in a new tab. With Microsoft internet explorer things that would open a new window on the boards (like an embedded link) open a new tab in firefox. The Classifieds don't do this (if I click the link in the ad for more photos or the web page I just jump to that page).

You could always right click a link in the forum to open in a new tab and set your settings to automatically go to that tab when it opens.

Sounds like it's time to switch to a Mac.

I use Firefox and have mine set to open links in a new tab also. I don't get new tabs when clicking on links to the threads here or other forums though. The threads just open up in the tab that I'm currently in. I also use the Mouse Gestures extension. I don't use the back button or forward button anymore. Right click and gesture with the mouse (anywhere on the screen) to the left and it goes back. Right click and gesture to the right and it goes forward. This one extension makes Firefox my favorite browser. I HATE having to use IE at work without the mouse gesture extension.

    Interesting! Computers are funny things.
See, you have things set to open links in new tabs and NEVER get it to work in forums. I have similar settings and get new tabs everywhere EXCEPT the mandolincafe forum.
    Go figure!!

To test, I set Opera to open threads in new tabs and it's leaving the original tab on the threadlist or wherever. #I keep so many permatabs open that I never run it that way, tho'. #

Opera also has mouse gestures. #The right-click/scroll wheel combo opens an open tab list (cntl/tab is the kb shortcut.) #You keep scrolling 'til it highlights the tab you want, let go and presto - new tab. #Actually, a new blank tab is right-click downsweep. #
Endless fun... must go practice. #

I use Firefox on a Mac and I have the same problem. Although I don't have Firefox set to open ALL links in a new tab, I do often use command-click to open a specific link in a new tab. 99% of the time it works great, but if I open a thread that way, I get the new tab as intended, but the old tab goes to the link destination too.

My completely uninformed guess is that it is somehow related to the way those thread title boxes work. You can click anywhere in the box to open a thread, not just on the title text. I think when you command click on the title text, you get the new tab as intended AND whatever mechanism is used to make the whole box act like a link ALSO kicks in, sending the original tab to the link destination too.

As someone else observed earlier, if you command-click in the box but not on the title text, you get the link destination but without opening a new tab. That suggests to me that there's some javascript or something like that involved, and the script has a bug or two.

    Thanks Dan.

You described exactly what I've been experiencing and I think your theory is correct.
I emailed Scott with my problem some time ago, but I didn't have the problem well thought out like you did.
Maybe if he sees this thread, he can see if the programming can be changed so that you have to click ON THE THREAD NAME to go to the link instead of the entire box being active.

    I appreciate your observations.

I didn't read this thread carefully, so I don't know if it was mentioned:

Middle-clicking a link will open it in a new tab in Fire fox- I do it all the time. These days, the middle-click is usually the scroll wheel- push it down for a click instead of scrolling it.

    Okay. Here's my final update.

I was able to program my touchpad on my laptop to do a "middle-button" click when I click a "corner-zone" of the touchpad. This opens the link in a new tab as described above by Rick. (Since on my laptop, I had no middle button!)

Thanks to everyone for the ideas.

    Problem solved.
