Tim braved the snow and cheap pizza to play a wonderful two set show last night. It was just Tim and his friend Luke Richardson (? think I got the name right), with Luke playing an electric archtop guitar and taking the odd turn on the mandolin when Tim played guitar. Tim also brought the fiddle out for a few tunes, and three songs near the end brought out a local banjo figurehead, whose name as escaped me but I've been assured he's a world class multi instrumentalist well known in town (I just moved here not too long ago).

Tim had his signature Collings/Nugget with him, fwiw, and it sounded great!

4 hours of fun, and Guinness on tap, it was a wonderful evening! If you get a chance to see him, be sure to do so. I'm a big fan and he didn't disappoint!

Right you are. His last name was either also Richardson or Williamson or somesuchson. I know it wasn't Anderson, because that's me, and you don't forget a thing like that.

Sorry you missed the show Mike. Think he's playing tonight in Red Deer tho, so if you left now you'd make it!

I believe it was Luke Reynolds, but the short term memory isn't what it used to be. #Luke Richardson is, indeed, a hockey player (or, at least, one is). #Craig Korth was the banjo player who, among other things, hosts a province-wide bluegrass radio show and, supposedly, owns a Loar # #(I hope that turns out to be the drooling smiley).

Great show from a great musician. #I can't imagine a more tasteful player and it seems so effortless.

Ah! Thanks Jay. It was also fantastic to meet yet another Cafe member at the show. Did you get an autograph?

I did. I always feel stupid asking for one, but, hey, I just happened to have a CD insert and a Sharpee in my pocket... .

While I've your attention: can you suggest a good set up person in Calgary?

I can't - I'm new to town, but would be interested as well. Mike from the Acoustic Guitar might know of someone.

Mike gave me three names, but I don't want to drive him mad with questions so I was hoping that someone had a luthier they had tried and liked--and ideally they would be one Mike recommended!

(Funny how we're all new in this town huh?)

So, let's see...I now know of 6 Calgarians (or close) on this board (and there were another 3-4 "known" mando pickers at the Tim O'Brien show...some of whom are on here, I'm sure).

I've had two luthiers that I use for guitar say they'd set-up my mandolin, but it was like they would be doing me a favor...LOL (and both are very good at guitar work). I think I know of another one that will work on mandos. Then, they are a couple out of town (30-60 minutes) that people have used and liked. But, I've never heard any consensus as far as there being "the one" when it comes to mando work.

I wonder if he is playing any other Canadian dates....doesn't seem to be any mention of Canadian dates at all on his website. Be nice if got as far east as Cape Breton.

I've lived all over western Canada, the best string luthier west of the Great Lakes is Myhre's Music in Edmonton

The Acoustic Music Store on the southside of Edmonton, is also very good on the luthier side but Byron Myhre may have the better selection of mandos.

    My ears are Burning :-)
Howdy. Sorry I missed the T O'B show. So is my buddy Al Williams who went to Emmy Lou and was sorely disappointed with the Band!!!! Most unlike Emmy Lou as she had most of the Seldom Scene with her on stage. - One of my all-time faves.

When I need a top level mandolin set-up I'll generally beg Michael Heiden, Larry Muth, or Peter Sawchyn. As you might imagine, no one else can even come close to their expertise. These worthies will not generally work on anything but the best, though. One of these days I'm going to test-drive a few of the local folks and see how they manage a medium grade instrument like an Eastman or Kentucky. The Webers come pretty well set-up from the factory, though there has been one exception I am aware of.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the T'O'B show. I really wish I could have been there.

    All the best.

This is exactly my point, and its not an anymosity between cities. Myhre's will work on any instrument and treat you properly. It doesn't matter if you're a first time player with a junker of an instrument, they will treat you right. You don't have to be a "special" customer to have good service or take anyones time.

...And lets face it, the players with multi-$$ instruments already know where to buy them, and where to have them fixed, not sure why this would need to be said?

I've been on the road for a long time and seen a lot of shops. I'm not saying anyone has bad service, I'm just saying where its worth your while to ship your repairs where you will be treated well... and you'll continue to return because of it.

Sorry I missed the T OBrien show. My friend Marc Ladouceur was slated to open for Tim in Edmonton. #As far as luthiers for set-ups in the Calgary area. #Julian Tubb #is within 45 minutes of YYC up in Bergen. #Julian was a saddlemaker for many years before switching to making resonator guitars, flattops, a couple of stellar archtops!! and mandolins. #His set-up work is top notch. #He's worked on several Collings dreadnoughts, a former Weber varnish F and a Collings mando for me. #He's super precise and a heck of a nice guy as well # (juliantubb.com).
As far as shipping a mandolin to someone for set-up during the winter, my preference is a drive out to visit Julian.
    #Regards, Doc

Hey Adrian. I'm in Halifax. Couple good shows coming up in Moncton. Lonesome River Band in March and Skaggs in May. Both Bluegrass shows, not sure what your tastes are.
