Can anyone compare the SD Cool Rail Humbucker to a DiMarzio DP-188 or DP-186? I have two customers that want humbuckers. One has chosen the DP-188, but the other is undecided and wonders what the Cool Rail sounds like. These are going on standard scale four string solid body electrics. Any experience with either? What is your best description of the tone from one or the other?
I have made emandos with both of those pickups. The Dimarzio units seem a bit more mellow than the SD - a little lower output for the same circuit configuration. The SD have a bit edgier sound - seems to me to be more favorable for distortion effects. I use the Dimarzios on my 8 string to get a little cleaner, more mandolin-like sound, and the SDs on my 5 string. I have the Dimarzios on my 4 string, but am considering changing to the 'hotter' SD pickups there also.

Thanks Michael. I appreciate the info. That gives me a better idea on what to tell my customer. One wants a jazz tone and the other wants something with a fairly broad range, so I am going to put a 5 way switch on the SD and see what happens. I'll post some sound bytes in the coming weeks.
