So whats everyones take on handcrafted wooden spoons? If i were to try to sell these at perhaps a bluegrass festival, would i get any takers?...(just trying to get a feel for the general census)
    Thanks!

Are these for cooking for as a rhythm instrument. I play spoons (or used to) for many years and you have to find the right ones for music... or for cooking for that matter.

For an interesting take on the spoons as part of a jam, see Con O'Drisceoil's song "The Spoons Murder" on the album "It's No Secret" (Irish music).

    The Spoons Murder

Given that, lots of people still like 'em, still play 'em, and they can be a fine addition to certain sessions. You'll probably get some interest.

    MaryEllen:

    My mistake .

As for the song, I haven't found any clips posted so sadly you'd have to buy the CD. It's worth it: I have a copy and it's wonderful. No mando content, but some great Irish music nonetheless.

Musical spoons is one of them Karma/Dogma issues and could get really messy.

When you have a band, the thing that seperates them all, is that people remember you, because there are lots of pretty good bands. I remember once someone in our band
pulled out some spoons and we made a joke of it, but when they played the audience went wild, so I think we made an impression that will last, dont know if its good or bad, but they will remember us. lol

Maryellen what kind of radius does the handle have on your spoons?

Also what kind of wood? Spruce bowl and maple handle would be nice. And are they hand carved or laminated?

Maybe an nice all mahogany spoon.

Also are you going to only make the A style spoon?

Any chance of a scroll? Maybe on the end of the handle?

How about distressing some, then you can charge a third more for them. On the way to a festival you could hook them up to fishing line and throw them out the window, then drag them down a gravel road. You could call them the Napoleon Dynamite Distressed Master Model Spoons.

This is a good place to tell my absolutely true story about spoons.

A buddy of mine is a really good bones player and a member of the board of directors of the national bones players association. At one of the board meetings, someone suggested that they could have bigger, better national convention if they teamed up with the spoons players for a joint event. The reaction was swift and furious:

"NO WAY! We're not gonna hang out with SPOONS PLAYERS!!!"

Everybody needs someone to look down on, I guess!

I'm actually looking for a 'new' bopping spoon. Something I can use to smack somebody at a festival if they are misbehaving. Somebody has to keep the crowd in line...

no worries, were not talking musical spoons here just plain old spoons for eating. Me and a friend of mine are just getting into the wonderful hobby of whittling and we do enjoy it very much. Im sure we wont sell anything for a long while. We were just curious to see if anyone was as into handcrafted wooden items as much as us. I figure the mandolin crowd here would appriciate the simple yet finer things in life. That being wood. We have some pictures of our first few spoons on this site. http://www.myspace.com/allaboutgrain

And i do agree...bringing out musical spoons at a festival would be hazardous

    Maryellen,
That's fine music playing on your website. Thanks. Listen up for the vocals, people. They come in after a while. It's sorta tragic surf/garage/swimmingpoolfilter music. Long live The Motels.

Sidebar maybe.... how 'bout limberjacks? I know of at least two parties out here who've been huntin' a limberjack craftsperson since their supplier died. Between the two of them they've a bit of variety - LimberJill, Dobbin(horse), Froggie, & the King & Queen of Fairies (complete with wire & gauze wings, and little twiggy crowns) - so from relatively simple Froggie (if a bit unusual) to dollmaker's/costumer's "toy". Plainjane outline of a man won't cut it, but if you throw some imagination into the craftsmanship, it'll likely be a go.

I'm holding out for a good set of chromatic spoons. I want to be able to play in all keys. (Do they make spoon capos?...)
