Jim,
Thanks a million for this link. This is good work and I noticed with pride that Jean Dickson is a fellow librarian. I especially enjoyed the more detailed information about the mandolin and its players in Buffalo.

Great article, thanks for bumping the thread! Interesting comments relating to the lack of mandolin recordings from that period, out of interest, anyone know of any that do survive? I'm aware of a few British ones on Pathe News, but what about in the US?
Thanks for the link, Jeff. That was fun.
From The Library of Congress' "National Jukebox."

Enjoy!

There are prob some duplicates but you can also check out and download mp3s at the Cylinder Project at UC, Santa Barbara. I donated a few cylinders I had esp since I had no way to play them. I just wanted them for the music.

The Library and Archives of Canada's Virtual Gramaphone has a few. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/g...e/index-e.html
Go to the link above, look for SEARCH on the LHS of the page, then click ADVANCED SEARCH, finally enter mandolin in any of the 3 search boxes.
This URL is very cool. The library claims to have over 15K recordings of all genres.
GREAT source if you're looking for a different French-Canadian tune to learn by ear.
TIP: look for a harmonica player by the name of Henri LeCroix.
He recorded many buck dances. They're all gems, IMHO.
Response time can be challenging (trans., slow) depending on the time of day.
I'm there usually late night.
Enjoy!
