I know this is a stretch ...BUT...you never know.
I travel alot and about 4 years ago I was going through DFW and a cowboy from Colorado ( he must have been a real buckaroo cause he was wearing a nice cowboy #hat)was playing a mandolin while waiting for a filght.
He was a friendly fella and he shared a few minutes with me letting me ask questions about the mandolin.
He let me play his mandolin and showed me some chords.
I am not sure of his name but I think it was Dave?
He mentioned he took some lessons from Matt Flinner...I think.
Anyway, I thought that this would be worth a stab in the dark, maybe he frequents this board. I would like to get in touch with him and thank him for turning me on to the possibility of me playing the mandolin.
Oh yes....his strap had an indian medicine wheel or dream catcher hanging off of it.
Any help would be mucho greato.
    Andy

supremely ot - but i heard a story about the less-than-modest, wilt "the stilt" chamberlain and all-around-good-guy, muhammad ali in which wilt challenged ali to a boxing match. delusions of ego aside, chamberlain believed that his tremendous, 7'1" height and long reach would be able to beat ali.

sitting comfortably, on time and at the appointed place, ali waited for wilt and his entourage to arrive and when they finally did ... ali was supposed to have cupped his hand to his mouth and yelled: "TIMBER!..."

... at which point wilt and co. promptly turned around and stormed away in a huff.

I can top Wilt Chamberlain. Many years ago, Andre the Giant was behind me in the checkout line at a Marriott. An imposing figure!

When we saw Wilt at the airport, my kids wanted to snap his photo reading Mad Magazine, but that was not going to happen.

When I worked at K Mart one summer, Graig Nettles came in to shop.

I saw Spanky from the Our Gang movies at the DFW airport once. But not the cowboy you're looking for - sorry.

Since this has turned into a "guess who I met thread", I met Grisman at a gig here in Dallas a year ago. His drummer either lost his kit or was trying to use rentals...not sure on the details, but since I have a whole roomful of cool vintage gear, I was called to bring some things down for him. I sat up on stage while they set up and got to hear that mandolin up close. It totally blew me away. Great guys in his band as well....
George Marsh (the drummer) took the time to chat with my 2 yr old daughter for about 10 minutes...
    Great guys...

I play mandolin almost every time I'm in an airport now, and have done so in DFW in the last few years.

But never with a cowboy hat. Sorry.

ps--i've heard you will NEVER see Norman Blake in an airport.

I saw Ali in the Atlanta air port in 1974. He was traveling with an entourage of about 50 people. He was in his prime and what a magnificent athlete he was in those days. I noticed right away that he didn't have his mandolin with him. G.B.

Go to youtube, there are many clips of Ali throughout his career, including the Holmes fight where he lost, sad to see.

I've met a lot of musicians, but not in airports. I met Mr. T in O'Hare once, I few from New York to Boston with Ed McMahon once, and when I got back to New York Al Sharpton was picking up Jesse Jackson from the Washington shuttle. I met Billy Idol on a plane once -- no, that was "The Wedding Singer" movie! I don't know your cowboy, but if he's a known player, someone will know. It's awesome the level of information these folks have inside their heads (not referring to McMahon and company, either way)!

I think John Moore lives in Colorado part of the year. #And he definitely would fit the cowboy description. #But he is more likely to have given lessons TO Matt Flinner! #

And that is absolutely no slight against Mr Flinner. #They are both monster players.

Flew into San Francisco for a friend's wedding in 1993; got off the plane, got the luggage and went off to stand in the rental car line. Before long, I noticed a young woman further back in line who looked familiar. Huh? Anyway, I was next up in line, so figured I'd get the car first. Afterwards, I went up to the woman and asked "Hey, are you Alison Brown?" Sure enough, she was arriving in town to head up to the Napa Folk Festival. We talked briefly and she said she was trying some different stuff for her new cd, which was to be Look Left. Didgeridoo meets bluegrassy folk jazz (on one tune, anyway). Cool! Love that album.

Well I never meet anyone - but I do have a nice new mandolin cafe sticker on my bright white eastman bowlback mandolin case, so if you see me, by all means say hello.

Yet another good reason to avoid flying at all costs.
