I didn't see info anywhere for what people do at MandoFest if they are not in the orchestra and didn't get in to the workshops. Is there any place in particular that people congregate to talk/play who aren't in either of the two groups mentioned above? Also, how do I get tickets for the concerts? I'll be driving from Michigan and probably won't go if I can't get into the shows.

BTW, I'm new to the boards here and new to the mandolin in general (since last Nov, guitar for about 6 years). So hi to all of you fellow cafe-ers. I have been enjoying this site since last August when I started looking at mandolins and have since bought 2 (silly for a newbie, but I couldn't help it). I am still very bad, but eager to learn, but I digress, does anyone have answers for my MandoFest questions?

    Welcome mzbanjo,

This will be my first year going so I'm not an expert but i'll share what I know.

It sounds like there will be a lot of us staying at the Marriott and there should be a lot of jamming taking place there. The Free State Brewery is just across the street and is supposed to be a hot gathering spot for pickers. Also don't forget the Saturday morning deal at Mass St. Music.

It's my understanding that tickets can be purchased at the door but you can also contact Scott for advance tickets.

P.S. Don't bring too much extra cash and leave your credit cards at home or you'll probably end up with 3 mandolins after going by Mass St. Music.

Matt, welcome to where the land is flat, but the pickin' is fine.
This will be my 3rd year, and in my opinion, most of the jamming is very informal and after the concerts. Be prepared for a little sleep deprivation.
I'm also at the Marriott, and hoping this year to see some open cases in the lobby (and jamming), as it's a big one. Some of the best times are just sitting and talking to other players from around the country. I got to meet Ken Sager and Drew Horton (or is that Djrew?) and other wonderful cats just talking over the pastries at the continental breakfast.
Peter Mix is sending me 3 Rigel mandolins to show (along with my trendsetting Rigel Blue and Michael Lewis 'Django'); I hope to have these available in my room and at some of the jams.
Have a safe drive and see everybody else in Lawrence!

Wow. Not fair for me as the organizer of this to spew my opinion but last night may have been the most magical night of mandolin music I've ever witnessed in my life. It's like all five acts played their best performance of all time or something. It was eerie. Josh Pinkham has gotten WAY better since I last saw him. Mike Marshall stunned everyone with his Bach solo pieces. John Reischman rose above everything in tone and taste.

And we're just getting started. Truly a night to remember for a long time.

Scott, I know it's a bit late to think of now, but did you record any of the performances? Something like this could be a regular (or irregular) income for the cafe if made available on CD. (hint)
