With my other instruments at Gibson being set up, the new Stanley is getting a real workout. #I have now had the Stanley for three weeks. #In the process is has gained a name, Molly. #Not sure where that came from, but she is Molly now. #The tone has opened up and has become full yet also sings. #It chops well, but that is probably not its strongest suit. #But man does it ring. #When you play open chords the vibrations just tickles the belly. #When you play melody, it has one register from low to high, as I have mentioned in other threads. #This instrument can play Monroe style grass, yet still sing a Celtic fiddle tune. #If I sound biased, I am. #I am in love with Molly, nuff said. #It is the best sounding instrument that I have played.

My Gibson girls are named Maggie and Miss Lilly. I wonder how many people have names for their mandos, and how many of those are female. Maggie and Miss Lilly bark at me, but in that good way!

    Shaun,

Coy has #12 (I think but it might #13). That mandolin is soooo good. Since Beaverfest I have slimmed down to a DMM. The Gil and MM are gone but I am really happy. I did not see you at Winfield. Where were you?

    Hey Goose--

I must have Coy's screen name mixed up.....and you're right, that is one good mandolin he has. I missed Winfield again. But I have a good excuse. I moved out to Virginia Beach over Labor Day weekend. So just couldn't make it back for it. But.....I hear Beaverfest is happening again this year. And I do plan on coming back for that. Glad you're liking that DMM. Everyone I've played has been a hoss.

    Good to hear from ya,
    Shaun

#7 sounds wonderful. Woodysny let me play his at RBW this past year. This was the first Stanley that I have ever played, but it is a good one.

Yes, "old" #7 does sound great. It has developed a deep woody chop that I don't recall when I first bought it. In case we forget, this is the same mandolin that Steve Stone wrote up way back when.... I think most folks would agree that the Stanleys are truly wonderful mandolins at the beginning, but my input is that mine just seems to get better as it ages. If you are fortunate enough to have one, I would recommend that you KEEP IT!

I am amazed at the growth in just three weeks. I am sure the it will open up more slowly as time goes on. I would be totally satisfied if it stayed the way it is now, but I will be happy to take the icing. Molly takes me to new places. There is a subtlety of sound that makes me want to try new things. I have written two tunes since I got it, and am working on a number of concepts that may or may not become tunes. I am very thankful to the Cafe. It truly opened my eyes to new opportunities and thoughts as far as my playing, what instruments and a mandolin fellowship. Without the Cafe I would not be where I am playing now (inspiration) and I would not have Molly (never would have heard of Stanleys).

I'm biased - I am a dealer for Chris Stanley. I am posting this as a player. I still own and play Stanley #4 as one of my two main F5s. Chris had the sound nailed right from the start. It has the volume and deep woody chop of a great mandolin coupled with an even response from string to string. Cuts well. Excellent midrange.

Chris gets a remarkably consistant Loar tone from his mandolins. The new ones I am getting generally sound like mine did when it was new 2+ years ago. They will continue to get better as they are played and open up.

    Best regards,

    Shaun,

I talked to Coy today. I was wrong. He has #11. If you remember it is a bit lighter in color kinda like the earlier Loars. Over the past 1 1/2 year the color has deepend and it really has a fantastic old Gibson appearance to it. One thing that has always stood out when I play it is that the neck is noticeably bigger than my old MM or my DMM or any Loar I have played. I takes me a bit to get comfortable but many people who are not used to the Loar profile neck need some time to get used to those necks as well. And like Charles said, it has difinitely gotten better and will certainly keep maturing nicely.
