Just a plug for Bill Petersen's instruments here. My wife surprised me on our tenth wedding anniversary with a custom made Petersen Level 3 Bouzouki. It's been a year and a half since then, and I'm still amazed with this instrument. It sounds phenomenal, looks gorgeous, and is incredibly playable. If your considering a Bouzouki you'd be crazy not to look into Pertersens. Someday I'm going to tell him he should raise his prices, but not until I get a matching mandola first.

I have a Level 1 Octave Mandolin by him. Sounds great and has a nice looking simplicity to the design. Has great volume and tone, a friend of mine has a Weber Sage and prefers my Petersen because it is louder and sounds better.

I'll second that plug! I'm a relative newcomer to playing... I started with a Michael Kelley Legacy O mandolin, about 1 1/2 years ago. About a year ago, I wanted to branch out. My instructor plays a Petersen cittern, so I contacted Bill Petersen about an Octave Mandolin. We live in Iowa as well, so we went to his shop, played the 3 OM's that he had, and I got a Level 4 OM (Koa back & sides, cedar top) We love it. Just last week, we went back to Bill's place, and bought a beautiful Mandola, that he'd built for himself in 1998. The sticker inside says it's a level 2, but Bill said if he built it today, it would be a custom level 3. It's maple with a spruce top. Now, if there were just enough hours in the day to play them all!

I have a Petersen level 2 OM. It far outshines my ability to play it. He makes very fine instruments for a nice price.
