There are some great clips up on YouTube of some classic performances by Planxty in their classic lineup with Andy Irvine on mandolin, Donal Lunny on bouzouki, Liam O'Flynn on pipes, and Christie Moore on guitar. It doesn't get much better than this. The link below will bring up "The Blacksmith," but there are links to a bunch of other Planxty performances, all worth checking out. Great band that was among the first to feature mandolin-family instruments out front in Irish music.

Catch it while you can on YouTube:

"The Jolly Beggarman" is a perfect example of why one might want to use a capo on a mando-family instrument to capture a particular sound.

I'll have to check those out. Do you think they are from the Planty Live 2004 reunion tour DVD?

It's a fantastic DVD. One of my favorite parts is during the biography 'extra' where they show "The Blacksmith" being played during the mid '70s and cut right to a 2004 version and it's like they didn't miss a beat!

I might be wrong, but I think in that clip of "The Jolly Beggar", Andy Irvine is playing a Gibson Mandola.

If so, he generally tuned it FCGc, a full tone below a mandolin. The capo was used to give GDAd. This instrument gave rise to two of Andy's current instruments, both with longer-than-standard necks and lower tuning - one by Stefan Sobell, and the "Andylin", made by Davy Stuart (I think).

Some footage of Planxty playing "Yarmouth Town" can be downloaded from Andy's website (www.andyirvine.com). It might even be part of the same show.

The Planxty DVD is great. I learned a lot from being able to see where their fingers were - easier than listening to the CD. I'd never really nailed "The Blacksmith" or West Coast of Clare" until I saw the DVD (I'm still not sure I've nailed it now, but I'm better than I was!).

    Hey Patrick,

Thanks for the insight on Andy Irvine's tuning and capo positions. I've stared long at the '04 Planxty video and some of the capo positions between Andy and Donal baffled me. (Not that I'm very hard to baffle... <GG&gt

I love these videos. I'm hooked. I had to buy three of their CDs.
