Mr. Thile said he uses a prototype Elixir nanoweb string with an E string gauge of 11.5 and the A string at 16.0. I have tried to find these strings or any string in that gauge and have failed. Does anybody here know how to buy strings like Chris Thile uses? Thanks, Steve G

Josh Pinkham was getting those too. Not sure when you can buy them.

    D'ADDARIO EXP75 too, and they're coated.
    (.0115 - .016 - .026 - .041)
Just hope Chris wasn't kidding as for wegen picks!

I tried reg'lar Nanoweb mediums......kinda slippery at first, sound smooth, even, balanced.....maybe a bit bright, but very easy to play.....pricey though. Not sure what difference slightly bigger E and A strings would be. I could see why Chris like 'em......Marshall has experimented with them as well.

In any case, the plain steel strings from Elixir are not coated in either the guitar or mandolin poly- or nanoweb sets. They're just ordinary plain strings. Only wound elixir mando strings (half the set) is coated. 11.5s are not so common, but you can find plain steel 11s, 15s, 16s pretty easily as single or bulk strings. What I would like is the option of buying coated G and D strings by the dozen, and find my generic plain steel strings somewhere else for a few cents each.

I usually go for the elixirs, but swap out the stock A string for an 0.016" because 0.015" A's just feel a little flabby to me.
Generic loop end plain strings aren't exactly hard to find...

you can get individual strings from JustStrings.com among others. Why buy the whole set if you just want E and A. You can get the 11.5 and 16's that would normally be in the J75 set as singles. I know because I have priced them and I have thought of doing the same thing myself. Standard strings are $.73 each and EXP's are $.77
