Watching PBS last night in Roanoke, Va had a show called "Open Mike". Had a band called Old and Grey with Vasser Clements Think the banjo player was John Lawless and the Mandolin player was David Grissiam. Had a lady bass player and a guitar. Was filmed at Floyd, Va in 2002 or so I think, anyone else see this wondering who was on guitar?

If it was Old and in the Grey, then it could well be Peter Rowan on Guitar.

Back int he day, they were Old and In the Way. They had Vassar, Peter Rowan, David Grisman, JErry Garcia and John Kahn.

AWESOME music put out by them. If you liked what you saw, you should try and find some more of the older ones.

    Here they are at Amazon.

This is really weird... my friend showed me an Old And In The Way CD she bought day before yesterday and I was commenting on the performers and how come I never heard of this and she said they only got together for a short while and toured a half a year before everyone got pulled in other directions.

Much like Johnny and Willie and all in the Highwaymen and George and Roy and all in the Traveling Wilburys.

    Was some awesome music!

I've seen that a while ago, Grisman is great but vasser's intonation was horrible. It was a struggle to get through but grisman made it worth it.

I love Old and in the Way, and saw Old and in the Gray a few years ago at Philadelphia's Jam on the River.

The girl in the group was a young girl from Texas, I believe, who did spot work for the group. John Kahn is a drug casulty, so he's obviously not available. This link explains the lineup: Old and in the Gray

It was awesome seeing Vassar play those old songs. I thought Grismna was more pomp than anything else. It all seemed like a joke to him or something, and his arrogance was a turnoff. Rowan looked like an old junky. The music was outstanding. Grisman broke a string at one point (something he occasionally does, but swears he never does), and Vassar took a five minute solo while Grisman restrung. Someone in front of me who didn't know who they were was like, "That guy's freakin' sweet."

The banjo player is Herb Peterson.

The original Old and in the Way lineup was very short lived, but their eponymous live recording is among the best-selling bluegrass albums of all time, due largely to the fervent devotion of deadheads who jumped onto any bandwagon with Jerry Garica riding on it. The album created a lot of new bluegrass fans and inspired a bunch of new mandolinists when it first came out. It's not particularly traditional sounding and it's a little rough around the edges, but it's a fun record with some great songs and performances.

Peter Rowan was one of Monroe's most intriguing guitarists and lead singers, and he's made a bunch of great records over the years on his own, too.

Just remember, as I'm sure you know, Garcia was an accomplished local banjo player in San Fran before turning to the electric guitar. I've actually heard an old recording of him when he was 17 playing in a bluegrass band. He was a cornball at the time, giving a bunch of wacky intros to songs. Good picker though.
