    Hi,

I’m going to be in Austin Texas Wed 9/27 and Thu 9/28 and was wondering if anyone could suggest any good acoustic music that might be happening those nights?

I’m interested in mandolin, of course, but also flatpick guitar, and styles including new acoustic, jazz, bluegrass and anything roughly related.

Might Paul Glasse be playing anywhere?

I know about The Austin Chronicle music listings, but none of the names I see mean anything to me!

    Thanks very much in advance,

    Larry

    Larry,

You might check out "Django's Moustache" a pretty great acoustic jazz trio-playing the obvious Django-fied sound. Usually some place in South Austin.

Too bad, as the Gourds are playing up in Dallas on the 28th....Kev Russell takes the mandolin to some pretty interesting places.

Check who is playing at these clubs, which are pretty reliable for good music (other folks can probably add to this)

    Jovita's
    Cactus Cafe
    Saxon Pub
    Continental Club
    Hole in the Wall
    Stubbs

It's hard to go wrong music-wise.

    Enjoy your stay.

Go to Barton Springs to cool off. (Don't miss it....)

Artz Rib House, great baby back ribs & various acoustic music every nite, Jovitas has Cornell Hurd every Thursday, you won't regret it.

    FWIW, IMO...

Cactus Cafe is great, and as a rule "The Place" for purely acoustic music...it's tiny, somewhat hard to find (it's on the UT Campus in a corner of the student union building), and the audience is there to "listen" first and foremost. #MANY big names have played and/or got their start there. #

    Cactus Cafe

I don't think Paul Glasse is playing anywhere regularly.

All the places Mick mentioned are likely to have good music, with a strong Austin/Texas vibe, not necessarily acoustic though.

It's NOT acoustic, but if you're a classic rock fan at all Ian McLagan (formerly of The Faces) plays an early show Thursdays at the Lucky Lounge which is great (he and his band are opening for the upcoming Austin Rolling Stones show.)

Note that Artz, Jovita's, Saxon Pub, Continental Club are all in South Austin within a short drive of each other, so you could hit a couple of 'em in a night.

I'll check the Chronicle and see if there's anthing I'd particularly recommend...hope this helps.

Thanks so much to Mick, Tom and Walter for the great info so far. I'll definitely follow up on these. I appreciate the Django trio recommendation, and Cornell Hurd Band seem like they'd be very entertaining from the clips I just heard. Walter, if you did check the Chronicle to help me attach styles to some of the names that stand out to you, that would be great.

    Thanks!

A few folks playing those nights you may want to look into further are the Weary Boys, David Hamburger (acoustic guitarist), Carolyn Wonderland (singer/songwriter/guitarist), Sonny Landreth (slide guitar), Cindy Cashdollar (slide guitar), Jon Dee Graham (classic Austin singer/songwriter), James McMurtry (ditto, son of Larry BTW), Seth Walker (blues), Paris 49 (also Django-style jazz!)...as you know Cornell Hurd is classic country.

Most should have websites with bios and sound clips, check 'em out and see what you think.

Any of you other Austinites going to see Split Lip Rayfield this weekend?

Wednesday night @ the Continental Club for Jon Dee Graham and James McMurty--definitely NOT acoustic (FAR from it) but Austin music at its BEST in one of the great clubs in the U.S. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

BUT...on the 26th Cindy Cashdollar and Sonny Landreth at the Cactus Cafe has to be THE show in Austin. It will be a mind bending slidefest by two of the finest players ever. And there are sure to be many guests (and if there is even the possiblity that Redd Voelkart is going to be there...well, Redd is amazing).

On the 27th, Monte Montgomery is playing @ the Saxon Pub on South Lamar. If you haven't seen or heard Monte Montgomery, this is where you should be. Acoustic guitar wizardry that will have you shaking your head in disbelief. ALWAYS a great show.

    Enjoy your trip.

I think the listings in the Chronicle are wrong, their daily breakdown says Jon Dee Graham and James McMurtry are playing their regular show on Wednesday the 27th but the ad in the paper and the club website says the Weary Boys are playing (and BTW, that means they go on at Midnight or so).

(And Cindy Cashdollar/Sonny Landreth is on the 28th at the Cactus, not the 26th.)

    Larry,

There are some good tips in the previous posts. I would suggest going online to <http://www.austinchronicle.com/gbase...cListings?>, then punch in the dates you have in mind. As this is Austin, you'll get more choices than one can imagine.

If I can add to what's already been said...no, I'm not playing publicly on those days (but thanks for asking). On Wednesday violinist Javier Chaparro will lead a band at Los Palomas which will include the amazing Rick McRae (George Straight's guitarist) on electric guitar. That same night young jazz singer Kat Edmonson will be at Eddie V's Downtown. On Thursday another option is 20's-30's style jazz singer Alice Spencer and Her Monkey Butlers at the Hole In The Wall. All of these shows are no cover charge -- welcome to Austin. Have fun!

Walter--Thanks for the date correction on the Cindy/Sonny show.

And hey to all the Austin mando pickers. If ya'll want to come to the Ranch on Wednesday, we could be the most musical place in Central Texas!?!?!?

    Take care,

Cool to hear about Austin here. I was down briefly last April and was at the Old Settler's Fest and saw Red and the boys at the Continental Club. Red lived here in Edmonton in the 80's. Earl Poole Ball knocked me out. Anyhow, fell in love with Austin, hope to get back to hit the Kerrville festival and spend a month or so in Austin. I'm retiring in April 07 and plan to spend a month there every winter.

Wow, what a generous community, and what an incredible music town! I wish we were staying longer, but I know we won't be at a loss for music and good spots to go thanks to all of you.

    Thanks again,

If you have time one day, call the Collings folks to take a tour of their factory. Then drive out to the Salt Lick for BBQ.

Sadly, we had to cancel our Austin visit due to the death of an old family friend.

But I do intend to make it to Austin one day and I've already saved away the info you all so generously provided, along with the further research that I had done separately too. Was really looking forward to that part of the trip but it wasn't meant to be...

    Thanks again,

    Larry

    Thanks.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival this weekend is the big news in the Bay Area right now, as far as I know.
