I keep checking back to see if this film has been released on DVD yet, but haven't found any info yet. For those who haven't heard, it's a documentary by Mika Kaurismaki, a Finnish filmmaker.

There was a nice discussion here, but nothing recently.

Anyone know where I might be able to buy a copy?

Larry, sorry to hijack the thread and not answer your question, but I'd encourage (during the wait) the reading of this book:
Choro: A Social History of Brazilian Popular Music. I hope to find the time to do a review of this soon; it's a fascinating read!

    Hi Ted,

Yes, I agree about the choro book-interesting read. I discussed it briefly here.

    A bit dry...but very informative!

Sorry, Larry! I guess I was asleep at the wheel when you mentioned this...
I'd agree with your assesment, a bit "dry" (written by academics working on graduate papers), nonetheless very informative. Probably my favorite music history/biography book was Michael Dregni's "Django." Very compelling, although a different continent than we're discussing here.

I just noticed that this DVD is for Zone 2 so may not play in the US which uses Zone 1 encoding. Is anyone familiar with this? There is also a mention on the Amazon site that some DVD players can handle DVDs encoded for other zones. I'm betting my DVD player isn't that sophisticated.

Probably your computer DVD player can handle it but not your standalone player.

My copy arrived today from Amazon.fr. Great movie!! It's really inspiring. The filming of the musicians is really well done. I was able to play it on my computer using the program VLC media which was already in my applications folder on my Mac. I could've used the installed DVD playing program but you're only allowed a fixed number of switches between DVD zones with the players in most computers. I'm sure a version of the DVD designed for Zone 1 players (USA) will come out after the movie gets a USA distributor but if you don't want to wait to see it, you don't have to.

One more caveat on the French version for sale -- it appears that the subtitles are only in French. There isn't the standard language selection option one usually sees on DVDs. My rudimentary French is almost enough and I bought it for the music anyway so I'm keeping it!

    Hi Linda,

Do you know who the musicians are on the choro DVD?
    Is there much bandolim playing?

    Hi Mark!
I was just listening to one of your CDs last night as I was driving home from a gig...just great....the CD, not the gig....although the gig wasn't bad. #
I loaned my new Brasileirinho CD to one of the people I played with last night since she just got back from her annual trip to Brazil and misses being there already. #I'll need to watch the DVD again to catch more of the names of musicians on it. #There is a lot of bandolim playing and great close-up filming, most of the close up bandolim playing is by Rolando do Bandolim of Trio Madeira. #Hamilton de Holanda is in it but not featured as a soloist. #Even when playing in a group with other bandolim players he stands out though. He's kind of a big guy but he also plays with a spirited, happy energy--not as laid back as the other players. #You can also hear the occasional tasty little fast lick he throws in. #
I wish I knew the name of the 7-string guitarist who is featured besides the guy from Trio Madeira. #He's a youngish, baby-faced heavy-set guy who plays with lots of expression and really makes the 7-string guitar sound like an orchestra. #I loved the scene toward the end when he plays Carinhoso and the audience is singing it. #It must have been incredible to be there. #I had goose bumps watching it on the DVD. # Darn, I wish I still had the DVD. #I'd watch it again this morning. #I'll have to get it back soon.

    Thanks Linda,

Let me know if you want any specifics on playing the DVD. My son sent me great step-by-step instructions for playing it on my Mac --I'll email you that if you want.
