Here is my trick...
No matter what finger I start with, I skip a fret before each finger (skipping a fret before the index finger means going over 1 string and back 5 frets; not skipping one would be 6 frets back) except before the last finger (if you start the the 3rd finger, the 2nd finger is last). If you go more than one octave, remember that they overlap so you are starting the second one on a different finger. That's it. If you can understand and remember those simple rules you know every major scale in every position.
