I don't know anything about Brazilian mandolin music, but I'm headed to Recife, Brazil a week from today. If I was to download 5 songs to get my feet wet, what would they be? What artists do I want to listen to? does onyone feel like trying to give an overview/history of Brazilian mandolin music? Anyone know if I could catch any in Recife? With your help, I can not be totally clueless lugging my mando around....

    Thanks!

I thought Marilyn Mair did an overview of choro music on her site. I don't know where it falls within the Brazilian context. Also, Sergio ??? does a Latin Mandolin column for Mel Bays Mandolin Sessions site. There is a link to his site at the bottom of the column. He has also posted some traditional songs in his column, so you might check the archives of Mel Bays Sessions.

You may not find much choro in Recife - choro is more of a Rio de Janeiro / Sao Paulo thing. But not too far away, the state of Bahia is a powerhouse of music, including a kind of electric mandolin called "pau eletrico". Do some Google searches for Trio Eletrico.
