Anybody ever put one of these together?

While looking at some other kits, I like the peghead shape of this one the best. Seems like all the others already have the holes cut on a not-very-attractive peghead shape.

Of course, the Stew-Mac has a nice snakehead shape, but it is bigger bucks. I am just looking for a knock-around, play-in-the-car mando.

    Any opinions on this one?

This has been talked about a few times, HERE'S one of the discussions about it. I wouldn't spend my money on it, personally.

I have a question on the IV kit.

I see there is a kit available that does not have the pre-cut f-holes. Is it possible to make an oval-hole mandolin from this kit?

tennbidder-- yes... the new IV kit (without pre-cut holes) was intended to allow the builder to decide oval vs. f holes (vs. any other shape, I suppose).

    Excellent!

I had another DUH moment regarding the peghead shape. Couldn't you just plug the precut tuner holes and re-cut the headshape?

My idea was to build an all-black mandolin anyway, so it seems it would be easy to hide any such alterations.

That is what I ended up doing on my IV kit. I got the tuner spacings of of a set of plans that I have. I had my uncle cut out the peghead shape.

    Good job.

    Binding work looks great.

    Is the mando finished?

Back to the original post. The Grizzley mandolin kit is dung. Notice the little holes in the body where the neck joins. Two or three dowels and glue hold the neck onto the laminated plywood body. Works good for ukuleles where there isn't much pressure on the neck. But a mando? A plywood mando starts off bad and gets worse.
